- "In 1928, soon after opening the first school in Picture Butte, another room was added and the high school grades were taught. Mr. Hughes was the first high school teacher. Mr. Lorne Blackbourne was principal in 1930-31; Miss Alice O'Brien in 1931-32; and from 1932 to 1935 Mr. Kenneth Russell was the principal ... In 1935-36 the high school duties fell upon the principal, Mr. Donald Baldwin, and Mr. Nathan Taylor. When Mr. Baldwin left ... Mr. Leo Smith became principal of the Picture Butte School. The school was crowded; the small high school classes were held in any odd nook which could be found - even the furnace room. In 1936 when the large school division was formed, the Circle rural school as well as two Becker Lumber buildings were hauled to the site of the Picture Butte School. The next major development occurred when Mr. Alvin Kunst was principal. When school opened that September there was not enough accommodation for all who wished to attend. School population has swelled because of the coming of the Japanese to the district. More of the closed, one-room county schools were hauled in; however, a new site had to be found. The result was that in October 1941 Mr. Kunst and the two high school teachers moved 'across the coulee' to the present high school location. From 1941 to 1946 the principal taught at 'one side of the coulees' but was responsible for rooms on both sides. Then in 1946 the two were separated and Mr. Kunst was named principal of the high school. From 1941 to 1949 the 'high school' looked more like a colony; at one time there were five separate buildings - with board walks between. When Mr. Kunst left to become a superintendent, Mr. Wiltse became principal. In September 1949, the Picture Butte High School was nearing completion. Mr. Charles Allen became the first principal and Mr. Thomas F. Rieger the first vice-principal. Others on this staff were Mr. Dahl Davidson, Mrs. Eileen Mason, Miss Mary Slemko, Mrs. Marion Court, Miss Shirley Walliser, and Mr. Jack Lowery. Expansion continued. Two years after the opening four classrooms were added. When the school opened in 1949 the Home economics and the Industrial Arts classes were still being conducted in conditions far from satisfactory. In 1958 a new technical building became part of the high school. This was doubled in 1965 and valuable equipment was installed. In 1959 Mr. T .F. Rieger was appointed acting principal and Mrs. Marion Court was acting vice principal after ill health forced Mr. Allen to take a six-month leave of absence. In September 1960, Mr. Allen resigned as principal although he returned as a member of the staff. Mr. Rieger and Mrs. Court were appointed principal and vice principal respectively. In June, 1966 when Mr. Reiger resigned to accept and executive position with the Alberta teachers' Association, Mr. George E. Hanna became principal. By the spring of 1966 it was certain that big things were underway for Picture Butte High School. Blueprints of a new wing and of extensive alterations to the existing wing were in evidence. Construction began on July 2nd, 1967 and when school opened in September, 1968 the new school was finished. It became a Junior-Senior high school with 480 students enrolled. The number on staff jumped from 19 to 27. With the addition of the Junior high grades it was necessary to have two vice-principals; Mr. Douglas Dudley was appointed to the newly created position. For the first time Picture Butte High School could boast of a regulation-size gym, three well-equipped labs, a business education room, a language lab. For the first time there were enough lockers, a lunch room, a staff room, and a beautifully carpeted library. For the first time there was sufficient office space for the principal, the vice-principals, the counsellor, and the secretary. And so when the new Picture Butte High School is declared officially opened on October 25th, 1968, a new chapter in the life of the school will begin."
