- History Biographical
- The Swift Current Broncos Hockey Club was formed in 1966, the same year the Western Hockey League was created. The team did not participate in league play that first year but played exhibition games against other league members and intermediate teams. The Broncos competed in league play in 1967, along with Moose Jaw, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn, Estevan, Edmonton and Calgary. In 1974 after a great season in which the team narrowly missed the league championship, the franchise was moved to Lethbridge. [Source: Swift Current Broncos Official Home Page http://www.scbroncos.com/team/history.php] The Broncos played in Lethbridge for 12 seasons, 1974 to 1986, winning the league championship in the 1982-1983 season. In the mid 1980s the team was put up for sale by owner Dennis Kjelgaard. Despite a large and loyal fan base, in 1986 the team was purchased by interests in Swift Current, Saskatchewan and moved back to its original home. Lethbridge was without a Western Hockey League teams for one season, until the Calgary Wranglers were moved to the city in 1987 and were renamed the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
