- History Biographical
- Charles Alexander Magrath: born in North Augusta, Ontario. Died in Victoria, British Columbia. In 1878 he joined a land survey crew. He spent 7 years in this field and eventually held a surveyor's certificate for every canadian province. In 1885, Magrath accepted the position of land agent for the North Western Coal and Navigation Company in Lethbridge. Magrath was active in local, provincial and federal politics and was elected first Mayor of the City of Lethbridge. He also served as first president of the Lethbridge Board of Trade. Magrath's first marriage was to Margaret Holmes Mair in 1887. She passed away in 1892. Two children were born of this union: Charles Boulton and Marguerite Annie who died in 1892 at age 3 months. In 1899 Charles married Mabel Lilias Galt, daughter of Sir Alexander Galt. Two children were born of this union: Amy and Laura.
