- History Biographical
- In 1908, the wife of the local Anglican minister formed a Relief Society to collect and distribute clothing to those in need. This role expanded and resulted in the formation of the Lethbridge Nursing Mission. The role of the mission was to provide public health services through a district nurse who traveled throughout the City providing assistance. The first nurse, Bessie Cook, arrived in 1910, and the Mission staff expanded to include a superintendent and two nurses by 1919. At various times, the Mission also provided school health services, mother's pensions, old age pensions, help for soldiers' dependents, and clinics pertaining to babies, mental health and tuberculosis. The Mission was ultimately absorbed by other community organizations by Catholic Family Services in the 1960s.
