History Biographical
Athena Rogers Bennett was born in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Her father was a physician, and Mrs. Bennett sometimes assisted him in his practice. Educated in Pleasant Grove and at Brigham Young University, Mrs. Bennett taught school in Utah. She married Richard Henry Bennett in Utah, and the couple had seven children: Willard, Vernon, Victor, Louise, Myrtle, Mary and Ennis. The Bennett family was part of the Mormon migration to southern Alberta, and came to Canada by covered wagon. Arriving in August 1904, they first settled in the Magrath district but later took out a homestead in the Purple Springs district. The children went to school in a one-room schoolhouse located 3.5 miles from the farm. The school doubled as a church. When they were old enough, sons Willard and Vernon took out homesteads on quarter sections of land adjoining that of their father Richard. The brothers started a threshing business that helped bring in extra money to supplement their farming operations. Richard Bennett gave up his farm at Purple Springs in 1926, and rented a farm south of Fincastle with son Ennis and Ennis’ wife Vilda Mae [nee Godfrey]. Athena Rogers lived in Lethbridge, and the next year Richard joined her in the city because of poor health. Richard Henry Bennett died in 1937, and Athena Rogers Bennett on 26 February 1956.
