Photograph of the Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District canal construction. Horse drawn elevating ditcher powered by 2 teams of horses, one pulling and one pushing the ditcher. The push team was needed to keep the ditcher from drifting off centre while digging the canal. Ditches were dug by multiple passes with the machine, usually a mile at a time, until desired depth was reached.
