History Biographical
The Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District was established in 1919 following a vote of resident land owners. The purpose of the District was to construct an irrigation system of canals and flumes to provide water to an area near Lethbridge and Macleod. The water distribution system was completed in 1922, with water first entering the canal in 1923. The District also promoted industries within its boundaries, including raising livestock as well as cultivating and processing sugar beets. The District was also responsible for land management, soil surveys, the establishment and management of Park Lake Provincial Park, and the sale of land.
Scope and Content
The fonds consists of minutes of annual meetings of the Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District, correspondence, subject files, annual reports, legal opinions, financial records, district electoral records, work reports, and cartographic records. Includes correspondence and plans pertaining to the construction and maintenance of canals, flumes, dams, reservoirs and other irrigation works; correspondence regarding the sugar beet industry in the area; correspondence and reports regarding the creation and maintenance of Park Lake Provincial Park; ledger and annual reports pertaining to colonization efforts; lists, entry forms, sale records of livestock raised by the District; . Includes correspondence of the Superintendents of the District, ca. 1910-1964, pertaining to all matters of administration within the District. Includes maps of local topography, plans of the irrigation works, and plans of District buildings, (1894-1960).
