- History Biographical
- Dean Roscoe Gundlock was born on 11 August 1914 at Warner, Alberta. When he was two years old, Mr. Gundlock’s mother moved to the United States and took him with her. He grew up and received his education in Denver, Colorado with the exception of the 1927-1928 school year. During that year he attended schools in Warner and Burdett. In 1932 Mr. Gundlock moved back to southern Alberta, and in 1936 married Jean Connor. The couple had five children: Donald (born 15 November 1937), Emil (born 12 August 1939), Jane (born 28 July 1943), Leonard (born 31 March 1948), and Marjorie (born 1 July 1950). The Gundlocks farmed from 1939 until 1958. Mr. Gundlock’s father-in-law was Maurice James (MJ) Connor of the United Farmers of Alberta (UFA), Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta (MLA) for Warner for 13 years. In 1940 Deane Gundlock was elected president of the UFA local at Warner. In 1946 he became a member of the Warner school board, municipal district council and the hospital board. Mr. Gundlock served as Reeve of the Municipal District of Warner in 1950. He continued in local public service in various capacities until his election to Parliament in 1958 as a Progressive Conservative. Jean Gundlock died on 7 January 1958. On 17 November 1959 Deane Gundlock married the former Mrs. Olive Burke in Toronto. Mr. Gundlock served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 12 May 1958 until 1 September 1972. In that time he worked to have irrigation companies qualify for Winter Works grants, helped establish the Farm Credit Corporation, helped bring the meat packing industry to Lethbridge, and fought to have post offices established in his constituency. According to Mr. Gundlock, the Waterton Park swimming pool was approved and built because of a favour he did for someone in Ottawa. Much of his time as an MP was spent resolving problems and concerns brought to him by individual constituents. In 1972, after he retired from federal politics, Deane and Olive Gundlock moved to Lethbridge. In July 1974 Mr. Gundlock was inducted into the Kainai Chieftainship along with Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed. The name Mr. Gundlock was given was Running Rabbit. Deane R. Gundlock died on 9 September 1986, at age 72. His wife Olive is also deceased. Sources: Wagons to Wings: Warner Alberta (Warner, 1985) Lethbridge Herald, 29 May 1973 Website: Parliament of Canada
