Randle and Wilson Families Fonds

Scope and Content: The fonds consists of 12 photographs, a soldier's paybook and a letter of condolence. Most of the items pertain to Mr. Randle's work as a letter carrier in Lethbridge for almost 30 years.

History Biographical: Bertram Randle was born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England. He worked in the wine and spirits trade in West Bromwich for 10 years. At age 13 he came to Canada with his brother Thomas, a former member of the North West Mounted Police. Mr. Randle returned to England after three years, married Gertrude on 17 December 1902 and returned to Canada for good in 1905. Mr. Randle settled in Medicine Hat, where Gertrude and their son Jack joined him in 1906. They later had a daughter, Daisy [Mrs. George Wilson] and three more sons. In 1913 the Randle family moved to Lethbridge, where Mr. Randle worked in a variety of jobs before joining the Post Office staff on 10 February 1914 as a postman. He was also the city's first parcel postman. In addition to nearly 30 years service with the Post Office, Mr. Randle was a past president of Lethbridge Mosse Lodge No. 792 and received a Senior Citizen Award from the Province of Alberta in 1955. Gertrude Randle was born and raised in Birmingham, England. After moving to Lethbridge, the Randles purchased the house at 929 10 Street South, where Mr. Randle lived until his death on 12 May1965. Mrs. Randle continued to live in the house until at least her 100th birthday. Gertrude Randle died on 2 March 1986. Mr. and Mrs. Randle are buried in Mountain View Cemetery.
