- History Biographical
- The Canadian Government Terminal Elevator at Lethbridge was one of a series of inland terminals constructed by the federal government between 1912 and 1931. Lethbridge first applied to have an inland terminal on 18 August 1913, but it was not until 1931 that the elevator was built at Lethbridge. The Northern Construction Company Limited and J.W. Stewart were awarded the contract for construction of the elevator, at a cost of $820,000. Construction took about eight months, and the elevator was turned over to the federal government by the contractors on 15 October 1931. The elevator was operated by the federal government until 5 November 1979, when the private company Alberta Terminals Limited assumed ownership and operation of the terminal elevators at Lethbridge, Calgary and Edmonton. In 1990 Cargill Limited purchased the three inland grain terminals which operate as Alberta Terminals, and continue to operate them as of November 2007. For more information about the history of the Canadian Government Terminal Elevator at Lethbridge, refer to the publication "From Canadian Government Elevator to Alberta Terminals Limited" by Irma Dogterom (Lethbridge Historical Society, November 2001).
