- History Biographical
- The Kinsmen Little League Park was located on the Civic Square, the in the area now occupied by the sports field. Built with money raised by the Kinsmen Club of Lethbridge, the park was officially opened on 31 May 1954 when the Tigers and Indians played the first game in the new facility. The Lethbridge Junior Band played at the opening, and Mayor Alfred William Shackleford threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Lethbridge Little League was formed in 1951, and by the time that the Kinsmen Little League Park was opened, the league consisted on eight teams. The Tigers (Don McDonald and Garth Pilling, coaches), Yankees (Bernie Merchant and Ted Green, coaches), Red Sox (Eric Bishop, coach) and Indians (Les Paton, coach) comprised the ‘American League’ while the Cubs (Bill Taynor, coach), Braves (Ralph Pitt, coach), Dodgers (Ted Petrunia, coach) and Giants (Ted Ponech, coach) played in the ‘National League’. The Little League was open to boys from nine to 12 years old. A Pony League for boys 13 and 14 years old was also started in 1954. [Source: The Lethbridge Herald, 29 May 1954, page 7]
