History Biographical
This mine was known by a variety of names during its existence: Bateman Mine, Lethbridge Gem Mine, Co-operative Mine, Social Credit Mine, and the New Royal View Mine. It produced a total of 62,707 metric tonnes of coal. The mine was opened by James Bateman in November 1925, but he abandoned it on 26 February 1926. The mine was idle until November 1936, when it was re-opened by the Lethbridge Social Credit Co-operative Miners' Association Limited. This was an organization of unemployed coal miners who received assistance from the Social Credit government of Alberta in the form of $10,000 and a promise that the miners would continue to receive relief until the mine began to turn a profit. Shares at $10.00 each were sold to investors, but never returned a dividend. In 1937 the miners changed the name of their organization, dropping 'Social Credit' in the face of political opposition. In 1942, with War War 2 in its third year and the need for employment projects gone, the Lethbridge Co-operative Miners' Association Limited disappeared and other owners took over the mine. The mine continued to operate until 1946, when it was formally abandoned. Source: Johnston, Alex et al. Lethbridge: Its Coal Industry. Occasional Paper No. 20. Lethbridge Historical Society, 1989
