- History Biographical
- This mine, known as Galt Mine No. 6, was assigned the same registration number as all Galt mines prior to Galt Mine No. 8. The mine began production in November 1908 with the latest equipment for high volume production, including a tipple with four loading tracks that could handle 1,634 metric tonnes of coal every eight hours. With the development of Galt Mine No. 8 west of the Oldman River, Galt Mine No. 6 was formally abandoned on 9 April 1935. Its tipple was dismantled and moved to the Galt Mine No. 8 site. On 10 March 1937 part of the Galt Mine No. 6 site collapsed, creating a crater 25 metres in diameter. Subsidence continued to pose a problem at and near the site into the 1980s.
