History Biographical: Known as Galt Mine No. 8 or Galt No. 8, this mine produced 3,187,403 metric tonnes of coal during its years of operation. Shafts for the mine were begun in September 1934, and the tipple from Galt Mine No. 6 at Hardieville was moved to the site of Galt Mine No. 8. The Coalhurst Mine explosion on 9 December 1935 accelerated development of Galt No. 8, although the miners from Coalhurst were already prepared to move over to the new mine after the scheduled closure of the Coalhurst Mine on 1 April 1936. Geological instabilities in Galt Mine No. 8 meant that it used more support timber than any other mine in Alberta. Rockfalls killed two miners, Robert Bowman in 1938 and John Filchak in 1940. Water was also a constant problem in the mine. Throughout the existence of Galt Mine No. 8, new equipment was regularly installed to maintain production levels. However, the cost of running Galt No. 8 coupled with a steady decline in demand for coal led to its formal abandonment on 12 February 1957. Among the miners to work the last shift that day were Alex Veres, Louis Slotta, George Latvat, Joseph Rapach, Tony Norgusta and Mike Zizich, all of whom were part of the crew when the mine went into production in 1935.
