History Biographical: Mine No. 761 was known by several names: Crawford, Hamilton Mine No. 1, Southern Alberta Coal Mine, and Southern Alberta Mine No. 1. During its operation, the mine produced a total of 9,897 metric tonnes of coal. The mine opened by John K. Hamilton in July 1918. The mine was leased to Robert Crawford, Fred James and Earl Spencer on 1 November 1920. In the folowing years, Robert Crawford maintained an interest in the mine through several company name changes and a succession of business partners. The mine was idle from 1928 until Crawford re-opened it on 27 October 1931. It was formally abandoned on 26 March 1941. Mine No. 836 was known as the Keystone Mine, and during its brief existence produced 2,550 metric tonnes of coal. The first owner of record was Eliza Harrison in 1919. The mine was leased to Thomas Whitelaw from 1919 to 1920, and Keystone Collieries Limited from 1920 to 1923. Abandoned in March 1923, by November the Keystone Mine was consolidated with Mine No. 761.
