- History Biographical
- The Kerralta Mine was opened by Lethbridge jeweller James Gladstone "Jimmie" Kerr, who received help from the federal Emergency Coal Production Board. The Emergency Coal Board, as it was known locally, provided a variety of assistance to the coal industry with the goal of boosting production during World War 2. The mine was briefly shut down by inspectors in July 1942, when high concentrations of gas were detected. On 9 August 1943 a gas explosion in the Kerralta Mine claimed the lives of four men: Samuel Crabb, William King, John Pente and John Zubray. The mine effectively ceased production after the accident, although a Mr. Hagblad attempted to re-open it as the New Royal View Mine from January to March 1944. The mine was formally abandoned on 9 March 1944. Source: Johnston, Alex et al. Lethbridge: Its Coal Industry. Lethbridge Historical Society, 1989
