- John Smith Stewart was born in Brampton, Ontario in 1877. He came to Edmonton in 1896 and attended the Provincial Normal School. In 1899, he indentured in dentistry and also joined the Strathcona Horse, which saw service in the Boer War. Upon his return to Canada, he attended Toronto Dental College and, in 1902, set up his practice in Lethbridge. In 1907, he attended Royal Military College in Kingston and achieved the rank of Major. He was elected to the Alberta legislature in 1911. With The outbreak of World War I, he was authorized to raise the 20th Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, Canadian Expeditionary Force, and, in 1915, was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and went overseas to France. At the end of the war, he returned to his seat in The legislature, which he held until 1925. He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Lethbridge in 1930 and served in Ottawa until 1935. He returned to his dental practice in Lethbridge, which he maintained until his retirement in 1960. He died in 1970 at the age of 93.
