History Biographical
Allister William Wilson Findlay was born in Calgary in 1920, and came to Lethbridge as an infant with his parents. He went to Westminster School and to the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. After high school, Mr. Findlay studied accounting by correspondence from Queen's University at Kingston while working in the accounting office of R.J. Paterson. Mr. Findlay joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in June 1941 and was trained as a bomber pilot. During World War 2 he served as an instructor at various installations, including No. 7 Service Flying Training School at Fort Macleod. Mr. Findlay was promoted from Flight Sergeant to Pilot Officer while at Fort Macleod, and was posted overseas in 1944 to fly Lancaster bombers. Pilot Officer Findlay was promoted to Flight Lieutenant while overseas. Allister Findlay married Mary Jean Raithby of Lethbridge in December 1942. He returned to Lethbridge on 15 August 1945, and by 28 August was hired as Assistant City Treasurer for the City of Lethbridge. He became City Treasurer - the title was later changed to Finance Director - in 1955. On 22 October 1973 Mr. Findlay was promoted to the position of City Manager, a job he held until his retirement in May 1976. Mr. and Mrs. Findlay have two children, a son and a daughter. Until 1954 Mr. Findlay was active in the local branch of the RCAF reserve. He was also a member of York Lodge No. 119 of the Masons. In August 1964 Mr. Findlay was appointed chairman of the Alberta branch of the Municipal Finance Officers' Association.
