- Archibald Laurence H. (Laurie) Somerville was born on 30 August 1898. Mr. Somerville graduated from the University of British Columbia In 1923 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Applied Science, specializing in mechanical engineering. He came to Lethbridge in 1937-38 as the District Airway Engineer with the federal Department Of Transport. During World War 2, Mr. Somerville supervised the construction of airfields in southern Alberta used for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. In 1949 Somerville was hired as Lethbridge City Manager, a job he held until 1964. Mr. Somerville was a long-time member of the local Rotary Club. Married to Margaret, Mr. Somerville enjoyed travelling and was an accomplished amateur movie maker. His films are in the Archives' holdings, fonds reference 19911043000.
