3 Sony Cassettes. Approximately 180 minutes. Interviewee: George E Strain. Interviewer: Sheila Petherbridge. Date: 22 March 1982. George Strain was born in Winnipeg in 1889. His brother homesteaded south of Nemiskan, in 1909 they squatted on the land until it was surveyed, then they filed their homesteads in 1910, getting started, wells & water supply. Water supply. Learning by experience, blizzard, 1915 the best year in Alberta, a bumper crop, moisture fell when needed, growing conditions for mustard, rape, flax, regestered seed growing, winter wheat, stock on the homestead, beef rings with neighbors. Dryland wheat, Marquis Wheat was very good wheat, but subject to sawfly. Rescue Wheat was the first savrfly resistant wheat, grasshoppers, cutworms, worms, hail, the threshing business, hauling wheat Bow Island, trails £ roads. Birds, animals, especially pronghorns, a prairie fire rodents ducked into their tunnels for shelter from the fires, the antelope. George's marriage day, George's family, his son's schooling, country fun, the people, trees, local coal mines. Coal mining , turkey tale, Altorado Picnic, the railroad & establishment of the villages of 1'emiskan Tape ^ was never finished because of the death of Mr. Strain at age 93. We went on to discuss Foremost, & the railroad. The mixed train carried passengers & was so slow it was known as The Virginia Creeper—if a passenger walked, he would have to wait for his luggage to catch UTD at the terminal.
