- Tape 1 Side A - Biographical information: Daughter of Joe Healy. Janey was born near Lethbridge and is about 83 years of age. She was married to James Gladstone in St. Pauls Anglican Church on the reserve by Canon Middleton around 1906. They had 7 children: Lloyd (deceased), Lucy, Fred, Nora, Horace, Doreen, Pauline. - Attended St. Paul's School - James Gladstone was a sheep rancher on the reserve. - Making of Pemmican. Also made wine from wild berries. - Her father was an interpeter with the RCMP and lived on 7th Ave South. The children would come into town and stay at the house during school holidays. - The Gladstone family had 5-10 milk cows, one of the few families on the reserve to have so. SideB - Horace talks about his parents: The Healy log cabin is one of the oldest buildings on the reserve. Both Janey and James,attended the residential school on the reserve run by missionaries. At the time Janey attended school there was a female instructor who taught the girls homemaking skills - sewing, cooking, gardening. - Custom of burying the dead in lodges. - Having tea is a popular social event. "Note: Janey, at the time of the interview, was forgetful and most of the questions were answered by her son. The interviewers asked questions about events prior to Janey's childhood memories ie. living in teepees, travelling to town on travois, Fort Whoop-up, therefore the tape contains little information on the Gladstone Family or on Native life and customs post 1900.
