- On 5 November 1993 the City of Lethbridge submitted a bid to the Alberta Sport Council to host the 1996 Alberta Winter Games. The bid was in response to an invitation issued to the city of the Alberta Sport Council. A group of seven people, including 2 city of Lethbridge employees, formed the bid committee which organized the 1996 Alberta Winter Games Society. Dr. Gary Bowie became chairman of the society for the duration of its existence, from November 1993 to March 1996.
