History Biographical
S. Thomas H. McCready opened the Red Cross Drug and Book Company in 1909 in the Acadia Block, 614 3rd Avenue South. McCready sold shares in the drugstore, and 2 of the largest shareholders were Ontario Druggists John H. H. Jury and W. H. Gregory. McCready bought out the last Ontario Investor, Jury, in 1920, but the firm remained a public company, although controlled by the McCready Family.
On 19 March 1918, the most costly fire in Lethbridge to that time heavily damaged the Acadian Block, and destroyed the drugstore. McCready moved to the Sherlock Block, 622 3rd Avenue South, until 1952. In that year McCready's Red Cross Drug Store moved back into its former Acadia Block location.
S. Thomas H. McCready's son, Thomas, joined the store after World War 2. Thomas H McCready was not a druggist, but rather operated a successful camera department as part of the store. In 1963 Thomas Jr. and pharmacist Max Everett Baines bought the store from Thomas Sr. The camera department was by then the major revenue source for the store. As large chain stores moved into Lethbridge, however, McCready's couldn't compete. The store closed in 1981?.
