History Biographical

George Bremner McKillop was born in Lethbridge on 25 October 1896. He was the son of Rev. Charles and Elizabeth McKillop. Mr. McKillop worked as a physical training instructor for Lethbridge School District No. 51 shortly before World War 1. At the outbreak of war, Mr. McKillop joined the army. He served as a physical training and musketry instructor, and later with the 2nd Tank Battalion in England. At war's end Mr. McKillop returned to Lethbridge and resumed his former job with the School District, a position he held for the next 42 years. Mr. McKillop also served during World War 2, and was promoted to the ranck of Captain in 1945. He received the General Service Medal (1914-1918), King George V Jubilee Medal (1935) and the Efficiency Decoration (1943). Mr. McKillop was also made a Member of the Order of the British Empire.George McKillop was a leader in youth activities in the YMCA. He was the Sunday School superintendent at Southminster United Church for 20 years, and was active in the Canyon Church Camp in Waterton Lakes National Park. Mr. McKillop was also an honourary member of the Rotary Club, and was a member of the Pioneer Pemmican Club, Lethbridge Historical Society and Masonic Lodge No. 39. As a member of the Lethbridge Historical Society, George McKillop was instrumental in the establishment of the Sir Alexander Galt Museum and Archives in 1964. George McKillop died on 18 February 1974.Davina Sang was born in Beula, Manitoba on 6 May 1899. She came to Lethbridge with her family in 1908, and lived in the Sang family home at 1210 6 Avenue South. From the date of this photograph, Davina was a teacher. She married George Bremner McKillop on 8 July 1925. The couple had one daughter, Dorothy, the donor of this fonds. Davina McKillop died on 2 March 1992.
