History Biographical

Charles McKillop was born in England on 20 June 1848. His father died when he was a child, and Charles and his mother moved to Canada in 1854 and settled in Almonte, Ontario, near Ottawa. Mr. McKillop worked in the lumber camps of the Ottawa Valley in his youth, and intended to study law. He changed his mind, and enrolled at the Presbyterian Theological College in Montreal. Charles McKillop married Elizabeth Ferguson Fisher on 23 June 1881 in Admaston, Ontario. In 1886 Rev. McKillop came to Lethbridge as the second Presbyterian minister, replacing Angus Robertson. Elizabeth followed with their two children. The couple would ultimately have eight children: Ena, Helen, Margaret, Jean, Donald, George, and two sons who died in infancy.Shortly before Christmas 1903, Rev. McKillop suffered a stroke that crippled his health. He was forced to move to Raymond, Alberta to take charge of a smaller church. Poor health forced Charles McKillop into retirement in Lethbridge, and he died on 20 August 1907. Elizabeth McKillop died in Lethbridge on 26 January 1938.
