History Biographical
Harrisam Hubbard and his brothers all had farms on the land now occupied by West Lethbridge. They and the Parker family were the original five shareholders in the West Lethbridge Mutual Telephone Company (WLMTCo.). The WLMTCo. was formed on the initiative of the donor, Mr. Harrisam Hubbard. He had been a subscriber to the Coalhurst Mutual Telephone Company beginning in 1935. After World War 2, Mr. Hubbard’s brothers asked whether they too could join the Coalhurst Mutual Telephone Company Mr. Hubbard contacted Alberta Government Telephones, who told him that not only could his brothers not join the Coalhurst system, but that he too was out of the assigned service area. The solution to the problem of telephone service for the Hubbard brothers and their neighbours the Parker family was the creation of the WLMTCo., incorporated in 1947. Harrisam Hubbard not only served as secretary of the WLMTCo., but also was its sole technician, lineman and purchasing agent. Mr. Hubbard also worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway as an engineer, and farmed all at the same time.
