- Penrose Melvin Sauder was born on a farm near Galt, Ontario on 27 January 1883. He was employed with the federal government as a civil engineer from 1904 to 1919, with the job of recording hydrometric stream measurements. Mr. Sauder was transferred to Calgary in 1905. In 1910, he married Florence Mary Aylward of Toronto. They had two sons and one daughter: Joseph Aylward, Frederick James and Mary Lazelle. P.M. Sauder held the following positions during his career: Chief Hydrometric Engineer for Alberta and Saskatchewan from 1906 to 1920, Assistant Engineer on Section B, Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District (LNID) from 1920 to 1923, assistant manager of the LNID in 1923 and then manager from 1923 to 1940. Mr. Sauder also served as Alberta's Director of Water Resources from 1940 to 1944, and Manager of the Western Irrigation District from 1944 to 1950. Finally, Mr. Sauder became involved with the St. Mary River Irrigation Development as its colonization manager in 1950. He also wrote a comprehensive history titled "Irrigation in Southern Alberta". P.M. Sauder died in 1971, at the age of 88. His wife Florence died five years later at age 93.
