- History Biographical
- The Lethbridge Research Centre began in 1901 as an model farm established by William Harmon Fairfield for the Alberta Railway & Coal Company.
- In 1906 the federal government assumed control of the model farm, and it became the 6th Dominion Experimental Station in Canada. Total area of the station was 160 hectares, 120 dryland and 40 under irrigation. William H. Fairfield was appointed the first Superintendent.
- The researchers at the station were concerned with land-use studies in the early years. As time went on, farm productivity, control of soil erosion, insect control, livestock management and development of new crop varieties became parts of the work at the Experimental Station. The size of the station also expanded, until by 1986 there were 500 hectares at Lethbridge, 17,000 hectares of rangeland near Manyberries, a 400 hectares ranch near Staveley and a 130 hectares irrigation substation at Vauxhall.
- Today, the Lethbridge Research Centre is the largest in Canada. Much of the research is a continuation of what was done in the past, and the centre has recruited new private-sector partners to help fund research, and market the resulting products.
