History Biographical

The Lethbridge Homes Economics Association was formed in 1968. It was the fourth such group in Alberta, others having already been started in Grande Prairie, Edmonton and Calgary.

Muriel Shortreed, a home economics teacher, first discussed formation of an organization with her colleague Margaret Wilson. They decided to contact all home economists in southern Alberta and invite them to a tea at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Lethbridge. Approximately 35 people came to the meeting, and the Lethbridge Homes Economics Association was formed with 30 members.

First president of the organization was Muriel Shortreed. The group first concentrated on studying the home economics situation in other countries. By 1971, the Lethbridge Homes Economics Association was lobbying the University of Lethbridge to offer homes economics courses. The Association also organized a 'nutrition' day program for teachers, pregnant women and young mothers in partnership with several other community groups. The local group also supported the effort to have Home Economists recognized as certified professionals in Alberta. Recognition of the Professional Home Economist (PHE) was achieved in 1988.

The Lethbridge Homes Economics Association continues to support the teaching and practice of home economics in southern Alberta.
