History Biographical
Lethbridge Music Club (1932-1939, 1951-1970).
The club was organized as the Lethbridge Women's Musical Club at a meeting held 26 September 1932. First elected officers were Mrs. W. J. Nelson, President; Mrs. Gladstone Virtue, Vice President; Miss Evelyn Shillington, Secretary; Mrs. G. W. G. O'Meara, Treasurer. The club's purpose was to stimulate interest in music, encourage students of music, give people a chance to hear visiting artists from outside Southern Alberta, and generally widen the appreciation of music in this region. Response to the club was poor however, and it discontinued functioning in April 1939. On 9 April 1951 the organization was revived as the Women's Musical Club of Lethbridge. This time, the club's emphasis was on the support and encouragement of southern Alberta musicians. Until it disbanded in May 1970, the club organized annual concert series and encouraged local artists such as pianist Dale Bartlett.
