- Multicultural Women's Association of Lethbridge 1987-Present The Multicultural Women's Association of Lethbridge (MWAL) was founded in May 1987 as the Immigrant Women of Lethbridge Association (IWLA). First president of the association was Rosemary Georges, and the first secretary was Gail Irani. The aims and objectives of the IWLA were as follows: (a) To provide a place for Immigrant women to express and discuss their needs and concerns. (b) To initiate, coordinate and promote suitable projects and activities to meet the needs of Immigrant women of Lethbridge, directly related to their integration into and adjustment to Canadian society. (c) To provide an opportunity for community, social and cultural activities among immigrant women. (d) To act as a group of spokeswomen on immigrant women's issues. On 16 January 1989 the name of the organization was changed to the Multicultural Women's Association of Lethbridge. The organization continues to fulfill its mandate by organizing social events and forums for immigrant women throughout southern Alberta.
