- Hugh Alexander Arnold was born in Naniamo, British Columbia on 26 July 1910, one of two sons of Herman Anton Arnold and Annie Reid Arnold (nee Dick). His brother was William Herman Arnold. Dr. Arnold’s mother immigrated to Canada from Scotland, while his father came to Nanaimo from Cookstown, Ontario. Herman Arnold worked as a bookkeeper, while Annie was a nurse. In 1913 the Arnold family moved to Vancouver. Herman Arnold joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps in 1915, and served overseas until his discharge in 1919. Annie Arnold continued to work as a nurse in Vancouver. In 1922 the family moved again, this time to Calgary. After graduating high school, Hugh Arnold taught school taught at an Indian school north of Edmonton in 1929-1930. In the fall of 1930 he entered the University of Alberta, earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1933 and his degree in Medicine in 1938. Also in 1938 Dr. Arnold married Islay Brown of Ceylon, Saskatchewan. The couple had four children: Carolyn, Judith, Hugh and Elizabeth Anne. Islay Arnold is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, and worked as a teacher. She is also a Life Member and Past President of the Kinette Club of Lethbridge, member of the Senate of the University of Lethbridge (1976), Chancellor of the University of Lethbridge (1979-1983), and a Past President of the local, provincial and national organizations of the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON). Mrs. Arnold is also a founding member of the Alberta Foundation for Nursing Research, and was a member of the Council for the Alberta Order of Excellence (183-1988). In November 1938 the couple arrived in Lethbridge, where Dr. Arnold became a founding partner in the Haig Clinic with Drs. Arthur A. Haig, Willard R. Haig, Edmund A.M. Cairns and J. Ernest Ayre. Dr. Arnold served as first chairman of the Haig Clinic partnership. Dr. Arnold also took post graduate training in Montreal, Toronto General Hospital and the Harvard Medical Centre in Boston, specializing in Internal Medicine. In 1950 Dr. Arnold was accepted as a specialist in Internal Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. In 1963 Dr. Arnold was made a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and ultimately became a Life Member. He also served as President of the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) in 1963-1964, and chaired several of their committees. Dr. Arnold was the Alberta representative on the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) Board of Directors from 1965 to 1968 and chaired the Bylaws (1965-1970) and Ethics Committees (1971-1975). Dr. Arnold served as President of the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine, Alberta Society of Specialists in Internal Medicine, and the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital Medical Staff. He was also Chief of the Department of Medicine in St. Michael’s Hospital for many years. Among Dr. Arnold’s honours and awards were the Alberta Medical Association Award of Merit (1978), Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of Alberta Medial Alumni Association (1972), Senior Life Member of the Alberta Medical Association (1976), Senior Member of the Canadian Medical Association (1976), Honorary Life Member of the Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons (1978), and the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal. Dr. Arnold was also active in the community at large. He served as President of the Young Mens Christian Association (YMCA) Board of Directors, the Kinsmen Club of Lethbridge and the Rotary Club of Lethbridge. He was the founding President of the University of Lethbridge (U of L) Alumni Association and member of the first U of L Senate (1967-1968). He sat on the Lethbridge VON board and was Commanding Officer of the Lethbridge Sea Cadet Corps. He has served as Moderator of First Baptist Church in Lethbridge.
