History Biographical
Written by the donor, Wendy Aitkens: Our mother and father grew up curling on frozen lakes in Delburne and Sylvan Lake respectively. They moved to Lethbridge after marrying in June 1946 and both continued to curl in the Lethbridge Curling Club until the family moved to Calgary in 1960. Both curled in the regular ladies and men's leagues and in weekend bonspiels across southern Alberta. They also served on organizing committees and club boards. Kay's successes in the sport were often documented in the Lethbridge Herald. One particular bonspiel she entered in Medicine Hat was significant in that she and her team won two of the five events. Her team entered two draws that would run concurrently which meant that the 10 end games started early in the morning and ran back to back to back well into the evening. The 3 day bonspiel actually flowed over into Monday. Kay (skip), Ena Rositter (third), Irene Lindsay (second), and Dora Bond (lead) won both the T. Eaton Co. event and the Channel Six event. They won what my mother described as a "lovely white floral blanket and smart T.V. clock". A radio reporter recorded the play by play of the final game/games on 3 vinyl broadcast records. I have the three records in paper sleeves, photographs, newspaper articles, and the TV clock. I have never heard the vinyl played but hopefully your digital whiz would be able to transfer it to a modern accessible version.
