History Biographical

Donning on their old lady apparel and armed with satirical songs, the Raging Grannies use their creativity and humor in protests to raise awareness on social and political issues. The Raging Grannies began in 1987 in Victoria, British Columbia. This social activist group, composed of women in their 50’s and 60’s, were initially protesting against nuclear threats posed by the visit of US Navy warships and submarines in the waters surrounding Victoria. However, the concept and protesting spirit of the Raging Grannies ended up spreading across the nation and even internationally, to places like the US & Europe. The Raging Grannies protest for various causes like the environment, guns and taxes, social justice and women’s rights. From 1994-2004 there was a group of Raging Grannies based in Lethbridge; the Lethbridge Grannies were the first gaggle in the province of Alberta. Even though the group dissolved, in 2019 the group was revived due to the outcome of the provincial election. The Raging Grannies participated in various events around the community and province, from going to the Pride Flag raising ceremonies at City Hall and attending a couple climate strikes, the Grannies never passed up the opportunity to educate and stand with their community on the most important social and political issues.
