History Biographical

Calligraphy means “beautiful writing" in Greek. It is the practice of writing decoratively and legibly- there are 22 English alphabets to master as well as variations. In 1981, Connie Furgason began to teach calligraphy classes at Lethbridge Community College. By 1982, enthusiastic newbie calligraphers needed an association to further develop their calligraphy skills, and so the Lethbridge Calligraphy Guild began. The first meeting was hosted on February 23, 1983, then on May 26 of the same year, the guild adopted a new name: The Chinook Calligraphy Guild. Officers were elected shortly after with Mary Bailey as president, Connie Furgason & Karen Krammer as secretaries, Emma Johnson as treasurer and Eva David as supplies person. Connie Furgason & Eva David were the first local workshop teachers for the guild members. However, throughout the years there were other events and workshops hosted by the guild, like Kalligraphia 93 and the international event, PenUltima 99. Renowned calligraphers would come to the community to deliver tutorials and lectures from time to time as well. While the guild focused mainly on developing their calligraphy skills, which can evidently be observed in the seasonal penscript issues published every season, the guild was not afraid to experiment with other art mediums like architectural origami, pop-up valentine cards and copper plate. The guild also took the time to create cards for people in the community, they made christmas cards for those in extended care and thanksgiving cards for the staff of St. Michael’s Hospital.
