- Artist Biography
- 1882-1953. He was a painter, printmaker, and writer. He studied art at the Art Student's League in New York from 1903-05. In 1917, he joined the Canadian army and was sent to Europe. Milne moved around quite a bit following the war, each change in place resulted in a change of colour, form, and theme in his work. He was strongly influenced by the Impressionist movement, especially Claude Monet and Henri Matisse. He painted simple subjects like houses, barns, flowers, trees and still lives, but the landscape was what dominated his art. The last fifteen years of his life, Milne began to paint a series of fantasies. It has been speculated that they were inspired by children's paintings, and possibly the birth of his only child in 1941. https://www.gallery.ca/collection/artist/david-b-milne
