- 1909-1976. Bertram Charles "B.C" Binning, born in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He was a leading Canadian artist, who came from a line of architects. He initially followed in his family's footsteps, but feel ill in his adolescence and turned to drawing. He studied at the Vancouver School of Art in 1927 under Fred Varley. In the 1930s, he studied in New York City at the Art Students League and in London under Mark Gertler, Amédée Ozenfant, and Henry Moore. In the early 1940s, he returned to Canada, settling in Vancouver. . In the late 40s, his work consisted of paintings of boats and over the course of his career his paintings became more stylized seascapes. By the 1960s, his work was purely abstract. His work is characterized with a strong sense of design, brilliant and subtle use of colour and interesting experiments with texture. Binning is one of the major figures in the history of modernism in Canada. His work can be found in many private and public collections, including the Art Gallery of Toronto, Dalhousie University Art Gallery, Heffel Gallery Ltd., Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery. https://www.klinkhoff.ca/artists/150-bertram-charles-%5Bb.c.%5D-binning/
