In the 1930s, he studied in New York City at the Art Students League and in London under Mark Gertler, Amédée Ozenfant, and Henry Moore. In the early 1940s, he returned to Canada, settling in Vancouver. . In the late 40s, his work consisted of paintings of boats and over the course of his career his paintings became more stylized seascapes. By the 1960s, his work was purely abstract. His work is characterized with a strong sense of design, brilliant and subtle use of colour and interesting experiments with texture.
