- Artist Biography
- 1905-1960. Born in Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Québec. Bordaus was one of the most important figures in modern Canadian art. He was the leader of the Automatists group. He was the principal author of the Refus Global, an influential manifesto calling for freedom of expression and signed by many of Québec's leading artists and intellectuals. During his early career, he worked as a church decorator and teacher. In 1928, he travelled to France, where he studied decorative church painting at the École des Arts Sacrés. In 1937, he taught at the École du Meuble, remaining till 1948; his students included Jean Paul Riopelle, Marcel Barbeau and Roger Fauteux. In 1938, Borduas was elected vice-president at the founding of the Contemporary Arts Society. In 1953, he moved to New York, which had a significant effect in his artistic development with inspiration from Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, and Mark Rothko. He lends his name to the Prixe Paule-Émile Borduas award, and it is awarded each year to a distinguished Québec visual artist. https://www.gallery.ca/collection/artist/paul-emile-borduas
