- Artist Biography
- 1910-2007. Born in Montréal, Québec. Bellefleur was originally an elementary school teacher for 25 years, taking his summers to study and develop his art practice. At 44 years old, he retired from teaching and pursued his art career full-time. He joined the Prisme d'Yeux, led by Alfred Pellan and became interested in the works of Wassily Kandinsky and Juan Miro. He set up a studio in Paris producing prints and etchings. He experimented with painting techniques, working with a spatula, which provided cleaner definitions to outlines than a brush and created various dimensional effects. There was a retrospective of Bellefleur held at the National Gallery of Canada in 1968. He continued to create lyrical and surrealist influenced painting, drawings, and prints through the 1980s. https://www.gallery.ca/collection/artist/leon-bellefleur.
