- Artist Biography
- 1904-1974. Born in Barbados, British West Indies. He trained at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal from 1923 to 1925, and enrolled at the Art Sudents League in New York from 1926 to 1928. It was in New York that he found a lifelong commitment to modernism. In 1930, he had his first solo exhibition, which would occur annually until the late 1960s. By the early 1950s, he gained national prominence because of his regular participation in numerous Canadian and international exhibitions. He often painted the landscapes of Québec, St. Lawrence, Georgian Bay, and also still-life pictures and interior spaces. The last decade of his paintings shows more intense colour, more open pictorial space, less enclosed or silhouetted forms, and more intense handling of the materials. In 1969, he was the recipient of the Order of Canada and was given a traveling retrospective exhibition by the National Gallery of Canada. https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/goodridge-roberts
