- 1919-2001. Born in Pabianice, Lodz, Poland. He initially studied civil engineering at the University of Caen in 1938. In 1939, at the beginning of World War II he joined the Foreign Legion, and became a mechanic in Avignon after he was demobilized. In 1943, he began studying art, taking courses in sculpture at the School of Fine Art. He was self-described as a "Sunday painter. He moved to Paris and after the war, took up engraving, studying with ex-patriot Joseph Hect and taught S.W. Hayter engraving and encouraged him to start the Atelier 17. His work can be found in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; The British Museum, London; Houghton Library at Harvard in Boston; Bodleian Library, Oxford and the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco.
