- ARTIFACT COMES FROM A FARM IN BALZAC, ALBERTA AND ARE BELIEVED TO DATE FROM 1920 TO 1923. *UPDATE* IN 2018, COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT ELISE PUNDYK CONDUCTED AN AUDIT OF ACCESSORIES, INCLUDING A BOX DONATED BY BERNICE ELDON. ON 2 MARCH 2018, PUNDYK INTERVIEWED THE DONOR’S HUSBAND, HARRY ELDON, ABOUT THE DONATION MADE BY HIS LATE WIFE. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM THAT INTERVIEW: WHEN LOOKING AT THE SYRUP JUG AND THE HONEY JUG DONATED BY HIS WIFE, ELDON SPECULATED, “WELL, I THINK IT MUST HAVE COME FROM HER GRANDFATHER… [BUT]… I DON’T REMEMBER THOSE.” WHEN ASKED ABOUT THE REASON FOR THE ARTIFACTS’ DONATION, ELDON RESPONDED: “… WE WERE MOVING FROM THE WEST SIDE TO THE PARK WHATEVER, AND SHE DECIDED SHE WOULD GET RID OF A LOT OF STUFF, AND THIS WAS ONE PLACE TO TAKE IT, BECAUSE IT WAS OLD, AND IT WAS SOMETHING LIKE THIS, YOU KNOW, THAT YOU DON’T FIND ANYWHERE.” ELDON EXPLAINED THAT HE MET HIS WIFE “IN LETHBRIDGE. BUT, SHE WAS YOUNGER THAN I THOUGHT SHE WAS… WE DIDN’T GO TO SCHOOL TOGETHER, BUT SHE WAS FOUR YEARS YOUNGER THAN I WAS. WE GOT MARRIED WHEN SHE WAS 19, BUT ONLY FOR 4 DAYS, AND THEN SHE GOT TO BE 20… WE MET… THROUGH THE BAP-TEENS. WHERE WE WENT, SHE WENT, AND WE GOT TO KNOW HER – MY BUDDY AND I – AND HE LOST OUT. AND, I KEPT THE GIRL.” HE CONTINUED, “WE WENT TO THE BAPTIST CHURCH, SO WE WERE THE ONLY FOREIGN PEOPLE IN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, BECAUSE ALL THE OTHERS WENT TO CHURCHES THAT WERE SET UP FOR IMMIGRANTS, FOR DUTCH REFORMED CHURCH. WE DIDN’T GO THERE. BERNICE WAS BORN IN ‘39, AND SHE WAS 5TH GENERATION CANADIAN, 4TH OR 5TH… AND SHE MOVED [TO LETHBRIDGE] BEFORE I FINISHED MY STUDY FOR CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT [WHICH] IS FIVE YEARS STUDIES... SO WE HAD TO WAIT UNTIL THE END OF THAT YEAR BEFORE WE COULD MARRY BECAUSE CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS PAID PRACTICALLY NOTHING TO LIVE ON - $50 OR $75 A MONTH.” PLEASE SEE PERMANENT FILE FOR MORE INFORMATION. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT HARRY ELDON’S FAMILY, INCLUDING THE STORY OF THE FAMILY’S IMMIGRATION TO ALBERTA FROM HOLLAND, AND FULL INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT PLEASE SEE P19980071001.
