- PRESENT BARONS CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL WAS BUILT 1930-1931, AND INCLUDED A WELL EQUIPPED SCIENCE LABORATORY. THIS COLLECTION REPRESENTS EQUIPMENT ACQUIRED PRIMARILY BETWEEN 1930-1950. SINCE 1966-67 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE BEEN BUSSED TO LETHBRIDGE. THE COMMUNITY OF BARONS WAS ESTABLISHED BY THE C.P.R. IN 1909. *UPDATE* IN 2015 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, INCLUDING ONE THAT WAS DONATED TO THE GALT MUSEUM IN 1988, ALONG WITH A COLLECTION OF OTHER EQUIPMENT FROM THE BARONS CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL. THE FOLLOWING BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM LETHBRIDGE HERALD ARTICLES FROM 1990, 2000, AND 2006, THE BARONS SCHOOL WEBSITE, AND ONLINE RECORDS OF THE CANADIAN ARCHIVAL INFORMATION NETWORK. THE BARONS CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 8 WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1915 WHEN THE DISTRICTS OF GOLDENDALE, LUNDY, LAUREL BANK, BARONS, MOULIN, WHEATLAND, AND STRATHGARRY WERE AMALGAMATED. THE ORIGINAL BARONS SCHOOL BUILDING WAS REPLACED IN 1931 AND HOUSED CLASSES FOR GRADES 1 TO 12. IN 1966 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS BEGAN BUSSING TO LETHBRIDGE, LEAVING ONLY GRADES 1 TO 8 OPERATING AT BARONS CONSOLIDATED. IN 2000, THE SCHOOL WAS CLOSED DUE TO A DWINDLING NUMBER OF STUDENTS ENROLLED. AT THE TIME OF THIS SURVEY, THE BUILDING IS OPERATING AS ALTERNATIVE PUBLIC SCHOOL SERVING PRESCHOOL TO GRADE SIX CHILDREN FROM THE SURROUNDING MENNONITE COMMUNITIES, MANAGED BY THE PALLISER REGIONAL SCHOOL DIVISION. SEE PERMANENT FILE FOR HARDCOPIES OF SOURCE MATERIALS.
