History
PURCHASED IN NOVA SCOTIA IN 1900. *UPDATE* IN 2019, COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT ELISE PUNDYK CONDUCTED AN ARTIFACT SURVEY, WHICH INCLUDED A STRAIGHT RAZOR AND A PIPE DONATED TO THE MUSEUM BY JEAN GALE IN 1973. AS PART OF THE RESEARCH PROCESS, PUNDYK INTERVIEWED THE DONOR’S DAUGHTER, PHYLLIS BERNICE VOTH IN HER LETHBRIDGE HOME ON NOVEMBER 21, 2018. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM THAT INTERVIEW: THE DONOR, JEAN GALE, REFERENCED THIS STEAM PRESSURE GAUGE AS BEING FROM NOVA SCOTIA WHEN SHE BROUGHT IT INTO THE MUSEUM FOR DONATION. VOTH EXPLAINED HER MOTHER’S FAMILY CAME FROM NOVA SCOTIA AND HER FATHER WAS AN ENGINEER AND COULD HAVE USED THIS GAUGE AS PART OF HIS WORK. VOTH DOES NOT RECALL SEEING THIS ITEM AT ANY POINT. THE DONOR’S MAIDEN NAME WAS SHEARER AND HER FATHER – THE LIKELY ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS ARTIFACT – WAS ARTHUR SHEARER. WHEN ASKED HOW HER MOTHER CAME INTO POSSESSION OF THE ITEM PRIOR TO ITS DONATION, VOTH SAID, “I IMAGINE THAT SHE WOULD HAVE GOT IT FROM MY GRANDMOTHER SHEARER AFTER MY GRANDFATHER DIED AND HE DIED IN CALGARY… [MY MOTHER’S FAMILY MOVED FROM NOVA SCOTIA] TO BLAIRMORE AND THAT’S WHERE SHE MET MY FATHER.” FOR FURTHER HISTORY ABOUT THE GALE FAMILY, PLEASE SEE RECORD P19738447000. THE PERMANENT FILE FOR P19738447000 CONTAINS FURTHER INFORMATION, SUCH AS THE FULL ORAL HISTORY INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION AND LETHBRIDGE HERALD OBITUARIES.
