ALTAR IS MEDIUM FINISH WOOD TABLE WITH TAPERED FRIEZE AT MID-SECTION. BOTTOM IS TWO WIDE LEGS WITH BRASS FRAME SCREWED TO LEGS. INSIDE BRASS FRAME IS CERAMIC TILE MOSAIC WITH BLUE AND GREY BACKGROUND. HAS WHITE ANGEL FIGURE WHOSE BODY AND WINGS FORM AN "M". TOP OF TABLE HAS 25.7CM SQUARE CUT IN IT FOR ALTAR STONE. ON FRONT CORNER IS BLUE PLASTIC LABEL WHICH READS "PROPERTY OF ST. MICHAEL'S HEALTH CENTRE 04947".

THIS ALTAR WAS DONATED TO THE HOSPITAL BY MR. AND MRS. R.D. GRUENWALD IN 1965 TO REFURNISH THE NEW 2ND FLOOR CHAPEL. IT WAS DONATED IN MEMORY OF MR. GRUENWALD'S PARENTS. THE ALTAR WAS REMOVED FROM THE CHAPEL AT ST. MICHAEL'S HOSPITAL BEFORE THE HOSPITAL WAS DEMOLISHED IN 1996. FOR MORE HISTORY ON HOSPITAL SEE P19960116001-GA. ALTAR WAS CONSTRUCTED BY LOCAL CARPENTER JAKOB MARTENS. IN A STATEMENT MADE ON 16 FEBRUARY 2007, RICHARD (DICK) GRUENWALD, THE CHAPEL’S FINANCIAL SPONSOR, DOCUMENTED THE FOLLOWING: “IT MUST BE REMEMBERED THAT THIS WAS A CATHOLIC HOSPITAL, PRIVATELY OWNED BY THE SISTERS OF ST. MARTHA. THEREFORE, IT WAS EXPECTED THE CHAPEL WOULD BE INCORPORATED IN THE ORIGINAL BUILDING. IT (THE CHAPEL) WAS DECORATED AND UPDATED FOR GREATER USE BY THE STAFF AND PATIENTS … IN THE EARLY 1970’S. THIS (RENOVATION) WAS PAID FOR AND SPONSORED BY AN ESTATE LEFT TO BE USED FOR CHARITY. THE EXECUTOR OF THE ESTATE (DICK) CHOSE TO USE THE MONEY TO REFURBISH THE CHAPEL. (MY) MOTHER (LUCY) LEFT MONEY FOR CHARITY (DECEASED 1 MAY 1970) AND ST. MICHAEL’S HAD NO MONEY FOR THESE TYPES OF THINGS.” DICK GRUENWALD CLAIMED HIS MOTHER’S ESTATE PAID OUT $5,500 FOR THE CHAPEL. LUCY, HE SAID, “WAS A GREAT FRIEND OF THE SISTERS OF ST MARTHA AND ST. MICHAEL’S HOSPITAL”. DICK SERVED ON THE HOSPITAL’S BOARD IN THE EARLY 70S. *UPDATE* IN 2010, NICOLE HEMBROFF, COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF PALLET RACKING. SHE MET WITH JAKOB MARTENS (WHO HAD PURPORTEDLY MADE THE ALTAR) TO DISCUSS THE ALTAR. HE SAID THAT THE ALTAR WAS NOT HIS WORK.

ALTER CROSS IS BELIEVED TO BE ORIGINAL TO THE BUILDING (1912) OR EARLIER. WHEN THE ALTER WAS MOVED FROM THE EAST WALL OF THE CHURCH IN 1966, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE CROSS WAS TOO LARGE, OBSCURING THE PRIEST WHEN HE STOOD "BEHIND" THE ALTER. DURING THESE SERVICES, THE CROSS WAS MOVED TO ANOTHER TABLE IN THE SANCTUARY, BUT WAS ALWAYS RETURNED TO ITS PLACE OF HONOR AFTER EACH SERVICE. THE LETTERS "IHS" IN THE CENTER SECTION OF THE CROSS, ALTHOUGH COMMONLY BELIEVED TO BE AN ABBREVIATION FOR "IN HIS SERVICE" ACTUALLY ARE THE FIRST THREE LETTERS OF JESUS' NAME IN GREEK. ST MARY’S ANGLICAN CHURCH BEGAN EARLY IN THE 1900S. THE EARLIEST ARCHIVAL RECORD IS A STATEMENT MADE IN JANUARY, 1906 THAT A GROUP OF PROMINENT MEMBERS OF ST. AUGUSTIN’S PARISHIONERS AGREED TO COVER A DEFICIT IN THE OPERATION OF ST. MARY’S MISSION UP TO $300. APPARENTLY, ST. MARY’S EXISTED BEFORE THIS DECISION, BUT IT IS UNKNOWN FOR HOW LONG. A FORMAL ORGANIZATION MEETING FOR ST. MARY’S MISSION WAS HELD ON APRIL 20. 1908. THE SEPARATE PARISH OF ST. MARY’S WAS ESTABLISHED ON FEBRUARY 1, 1910. THE “NEW” CHURCH WAS BUILT IN 1912, AND USED BY THE PARISH UNTIL IT CLOSED IN 2003. THE NORTH SIDE CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP THEN RENTED THE BUILDING UNTIL 2006, WHEN THE PROPERTY WAS SOLD TO A PRIVATE INDIVIDUAL. THERE WERE AT LEAST EIGHT RECTORS (PRIESTS) AT ST MARY’S BETWEEN 1910 AND 1944, INCLUDING SOME PERIODS OF TIME WHEN NO PRIEST WAS AVAILABLE (OR AFFORDABLE). IN 1944, ROBERT COWAN ARRIVED AND SERVED ST. MARY’S FOR THE NEXT 37 YEARS UNTIL 1981, A TERM UNPARALLELED IN THE ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF CALGARY. IT WAS DURING THIS TIME THAT ST. MICHAEL EBSWORTH SERVED AS RECTOR FROM 1981 UNTIL 1994, WHEN HE RESIGNED DUE TO HEALTH REASONS. FATHER EBSWORTH REMAINED A RESIDENT OF LETHBRIDGE, OFTEN SERVING AS A “VISITING” PRIEST, AND HE TOOK PART IN THE FINAL SERVICE AT ST. MARY’S HELD ON AUGUST 14, 2003. IN THE FINAL DECADE OF ST MARY’S EXISTENCE, FIVE OTHER PRIESTS SERVED THE PARISH, INCLUDING TWO FEMALE PRIESTS WHICH SOME FOUND SURPRISING DUE TO ST. MARY’S TRADITIONAL LITURGICAL PRACTICES. CAST IRON STEEPLE BELL WITH CLAPPER. CAST IRON MOUNT AND CORD HOLDING MOVEMENT WHEEL (SEPARATE PCE) FOR BELL OPERATION. ROPE ATTACHED TO ARM OF MOUNT. RD PAINT CAN BE SEEN ON INTERIOR OF BELL THROUGH WEAR OF METAL. BELL IS VERY RUSTED.

BELL WAS USED UP TO THE CLOSURE OF THE ST. MARY'S CHURCH IN 2003. IT WAS RUNG BEFORE EACH SERVICE TO SUMMON THE FAITHFUL. THE BELL DOES NOT HAVE A MUSICAL SOUND, AND IT IS SAID THAT THE BELL CAME FROM THE FIRST LOCOMOTIVE USED IN THE LETHBRIDGE COLLIERY. AS MANY OF THE EARLY PARISHIONERS OF ST. MARY'S WERE MINING FAMILIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE NUMBER 3 MINE, IT IS A VERY PLAUSIBLE STORY. THIS STORY HAS BEEN REPEATED IN A NUMBER OF PRINTED ARTICLES, SOME OF WHICH ARE IN THE ARCHIVES IN CALGARY. ST MARY’S ANGLICAN CHURCH BEGAN EARLY IN THE 1900S. ON MAY 28, 2019, COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED CARLA SAMUELS REGARDING HER DONATION OF KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS MATERIALS. SAMUELS’ FATHER, WALTER D. CURRIE, WAS A MEMBER WITH THE KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS IN LETHBRIDGE. ON THE KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS ITEMS, SAMUELS RECALLED, “WE’VE HAD ALL THESE OBJECTS, ARTIFACTS FOR OVER 40-50 YEARS AND IT IS TIME THAT THEY BE GIVEN TO SOMEONE THAT WOULD BE INTERESTED IN KNOWING THE HISTORY OF LETHBRIDGE AND ALL THE PAST MEMBERS OF THE KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS, LODGE NUMBER [TWO]. MY FATHER WALTER CURRIE WAS ONE OF THE MEMBERS. HE WAS SECRETARY FOR THAT LODGE. HE KEPT…THE LETTERHEAD THAT I REMEMBER AS A CHILD HIM TYPING ON AN OLD TYPEWRITER WITH THAT LETTERHEAD…AS CHILDREN WE WERE ALWAYS INTERESTED IN HIS CEREMONIAL COSTUMES BUT NOTHING MUCH WAS SAID ABOUT THE LODGE.” “[THESE ITEMS HAVE] BEEN STORED IN A BOX FOR ALL THESE YEARS. A COUPLE [OF THE REGALIA SETS] HAVE BEEN USED FOR HALLOWEEN COSTUMES…THE BLACK PRIEST COSTUME AND THE BURGUNDY AND GOLD SILK COSTUME…WE USED TO USE IT AS A MATADOR…IT’S SIMILAR TO THE SHRINERS COSTUMES IN A WAY—SOMETHING EGYPTIAN…THEY JUST LAID AROUND…” “THEY WERE IN THE BASEMENT IN A CLOSET. IT WAS HUGE OLD UNDERWOOD TYPEWRITER ON A BIG OVAL-FOOTED DESK AND THE FILE BOX TOO WAS NEXT TO THE TYPEWRITER…I KNOW HE WAS IN THE PYTHIAN LODGE PROBABLY IN THE LATE 1950S. THE ARTICLE NOTED WALTER CURRIE SERVED AS CHANCELLOR OF THE LETHBRIDGE KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS FROM 1959-1960, AND THAT “PRESENT EXECUTIVES” INCLUDED CURRIE AS THE PAST-CHANCELLOR AND TREASURER. BEIGE PLASTIC FLASK WITH CHROME LID. BOTTLE IS RECTANGULAR FLASK WITH ROUNDED SIDES AND CRESCENT BODY. BOTH FRONT AND BACK HAVE RIBBED VERTICAL LINES MOLDED INTO PLASTIC AT SIDES. RAISED ON BOTTOM OF FLASK IS A CROWN LOGO. FLASK HAS SIMPLE CHROME CAP WITH GROOVED EDGE GRIP AND THREADED TO FIT ON BOTTLE. CYLINDRICAL CHROME LID FITS OVER CAP LIKE A THERMOS TOP. LID HAS ROUNDED TOP AND FLARED BOTTOM. ALSO HAS THREADS MOULDED INTO IT TO SCREW DOWN ON BOTTLE. WRITTEN IN RED INK ON SIDE OF BOTTLE IS A SMALL RED CROSS AND BAPTISMAL WATER. BOTTLE HAS BROWN WATER SCALE INSIDE AND GREEN CORROSION AROUND MOUTH.

THESE BEADED BRACELETS WOULD HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE TO CHURCH MEMBERS WHO MAY HAVE FORGOTTEN THEIR NENJU AT HOME. DURING ‘GASSHO’, A GESTURE OF RESPECT THAT IS PAID TO AMIDA BUDDHA, THE BEADS ARE PLACED AROUND THE HANDS, WITH THE TASSEL HANGING DOWN DIRECTLY IN THE CENTER. THEY ARE ALSO USED DURING MEDITATION. HEAD WEAR WAS WORN BY FEMALE MEMBERS OF THE CHOIR. THE HEAD WEAR DISAPPEARED BY 1980 AND THIS PARTICULAR INCARNATION OF THE CHOIR DISAPPEARED A FEW YEARS LATER. ST MARY’S ANGLICAN CHURCH BEGAN EARLY IN THE 1900S. THE EARLIEST ARCHIVAL RECORD IS A STATEMENT MADE IN JANUARY, 1906 THAT A GROUP OF PROMINENT MEMBERS OF ST. AUGUSTIN’S PARISHIONERS AGREED TO COVER A DEFICIT IN THE OPERATION OF ST. MARY’S MISSION UP TO $300. APPARENTLY, ST. MARY’S EXISTED BEFORE THIS DECISION, BUT IT IS UNKNOWN FOR HOW LONG. A FORMAL ORGANIZATION MEETING FOR ST. MARY’S MISSION WAS HELD ON APRIL 20. 1908. THE SEPARATE PARISH OF ST. MARY’S WAS ESTABLISHED ON FEBRUARY 1, 1910. THE “NEW” CHURCH WAS BUILT IN 1912, AND USED BY THE PARISH UNTIL IT CLOSED IN 2003. THE NORTH SIDE CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP THEN RENTED THE BUILDING UNTIL 2006, WHEN THE PROPERTY WAS SOLD TO A PRIVATE INDIVIDUAL. THERE WERE AT LEAST EIGHT RECTORS (PRIESTS) AT ST MARY’S BETWEEN 1910 AND 1944, INCLUDING SOME PERIODS OF TIME WHEN NO PRIEST WAS AVAILABLE (OR AFFORDABLE). IN 1944, ROBERT COWAN ARRIVED AND SERVED ST. MARY’S FOR THE NEXT 37 YEARS UNTIL 1981, A TERM UNPARALLELED IN THE ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF CALGARY. IT WAS DURING THIS TIME THAT ST. MARY’S BECAME KNOWN HAS ST. MARY THE VIRGIN. CANON COWAN RETURNED TO ST MARY’S AS A PARISHIONER FOR A FEW YEARS LATER, AND REMAINED UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1999. MICHAEL EBSWORTH SERVED AS RECTOR FROM 1981 UNTIL 1994, WHEN HE RESIGNED DUE TO HEALTH REASONS. FATHER EBSWORTH REMAINED A RESIDENT OF LETHBRIDGE, OFTEN SERVING AS A “VISITING” PRIEST, AND HE TOOK PART IN THE FINAL SERVICE AT ST. MARY’S HELD ON AUGUST 14, 2003. IN THE FINAL DECADE OF ST MARY’S EXISTENCE, FIVE OTHER PRIESTS SERVED THE PARISH, INCLUDING TWO FEMALE PRIESTS WHICH SOME FOUND SURPRISING DUE TO ST. MARY’S TRADITIONAL LITURGICAL PRACTICES. THE CHURCH CLOSED AND AMALGAMATED WITH THE ANGLICAN PARISH OF ST. AUGUSTINE. OTHER OBJECTS AND ARCHIVAL MATERIALS ASSOCIATED WITH ST. MARY'S OPERATION WERE TRANSFERRED TO THE ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF CALGARY. AT THE TIME OF ITS CLOSURE, ST MARY'S WAS THE LONGEST OPERATING OF ANY LETHBRIDGE CHURCH IN THE CURRENT PREMISES. STOLE - STOLE IS 9.5CM X 260CM IN SIZE AND IS NARROW AT MIDDLE AND TAPERS WIDER AT ENDS. FABRIC IS BEIGE AND SAME PATTERN AS CHASUBLE. STOLE HAS DEEP RED NYLON LINING AND COTTON LACE COLLAR ALONG MIDDLE. STOLE HAS GOLD COLORED NYLON TASSELS AT ENDS WITH RED, BLACK AND BRONZE BORDER. ALSO HAS THREE CROSSES SEWN TO IT IN SAME MATERIAL AS BORDER, ONE ON EACH END AND ONE IN MIDDLE.
