History / Biographical
The Lethbridge Research Centre has its origins with the establishment of a Model Farm by the Galt companies in 1902. The Galts hired William Fairfield to organize the farm. In 1906 the federal government took over operation of the farm, and Dr. Fairfield was named first Superintendent of the Dominion Experimental Station.
In 1913 the Dominion Entomological Laboratory was established as a separate unit. The Science Service Laboratories were created in 1949 from the Entomological Laboratory, the Livestock Insect Laboratory (founded 1946), and new Plant Pathology and Chemistry sections. In 1959 the Science Service Laboratories and Experimental Farm merged into the Agriculture Canada Research Station at Lethbridge.
The Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Act Drainage Division at Vauxhall (founded 1941) joined the Research Station in 1961. The Dominion Range Experiment Station at Manyberries (founded 1927) joined the research Station in 1964. In 2003, the Lethbridge Research Centre also incorporates a Range Research Unit at Kamloops, and Research Substations at Onefour and Stavely. The Centre also serves as the Information Technology headquarters for the Western Region of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
