History
ACCORDING TO INSPECTOR BILL KAYE, WHO USED THE HARNESS IN CONJUNCTION WITH HIS POLICE SERVICE DOG, ZORKO, THE ITEM WAS USED FOR TRACKING. HE SAID, "THIS WAS BASICALLY MY WORKING HARNESS. IT'S QUICK TO PUT ON; IT'S VELCRO..." THE HARNESS WAS BETTER THAN A COLLAR BECAUSE IT ALLOWED THE HEAD AND NECK TO REMAIN FREE, "THERE WAS NO OBSTRUCTION TO BREATHING. THIS STRAP ON THE FRONT HERE GOES ACROSS THE CHEST, JUST ABOVE THE SHOULDERS AND YOU PULL FROM THIS [RING] ON THE BACK OF THE [HARNESS]... SO YOU'RE NOT PULLING THE HEAD UP BECAUSE IT'S MPORTANT THAT THE DOG'S HEAD STAYS DOWN." THE HARNESS WAS MOST COMMONLY USED WITH THE TRACKING LEASH (P20080008005). FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE HISTORY OF ZORKO AND THE CANINE UNIT SEE P20080008001. FOR MORE INFORMATION SEE PERMANENT FILE.

History
THIS LAMP WAS GIFT TO THE MAYOR AND COMMISSIONER OF PUBLIC SAFETY OF LETHBRIDGE W.D.L. HARDIE UPON THE NOTORIZATION OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT IN 1919. *UPDATE* IN 2015 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF ART OBJECTS, INCLUDING ONE ASSOCIATED WITH LETHBRIDGE MAYOR W. D. L. HARDIE, THE ORIGINAL RECIPIENT OF THIS ARTIFACT. THE FOLLOWING BIOGRAPHY OF W. D. L. HARDIE WAS DEVELOPED WITH INFORMATION FROM A TRIBUTE ARTICLE FROM THE JUNE 16, 1942 ISSUE OF THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD. WILLIAM DUNCAN LIVINGSTONE HARDIE WAS BORN NEAR EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND IN 1862, AND THE FAMILY IMMIGRATED TO OHIO THE FOLLOWING YEAR. IN 1885 HARDIE MARRIED MARGARET KIRTLEY, AND THEY HAD FIVE CHILDREN: IANTHE, AGNES, E.W., JESSE, AND INZOLA. HARDIE FIRST CAME TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1889, WHEN HE BECAME THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF THE GALT NO. 1 MINE. AFTER FOUR YEARS HE RETURNED TO THE UNITED STATES, WORKING FOR MINING COMPANIES IN PENNSYLVANIA, TENNESSEE, AND ALABAMA BEFORE RETURNING TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1896 AS SUPERINTENDENT OF NORTHWEST COAL & NAVIGATION COMPANY. IN 1910 HARDIE LEFT THE GALT-OWNED COMPANY AND WORKED AS THE MANAGER OF THE DIAMOND COAL COMPANY UNTIL 1912, WHEN HE RAN FOR AND WON THE OFFICE OF LETHBRIDGE MAYOR. HARDIE SERVED AS MAYOR UNTIL 1928, WHEN HE WAS REPLACED BY ROBERT BARROWMAN. IN 1930 HARDIE HAD AN UNSUCCESSFUL RUN FOR THE LETHBRIDG SEAT IN THE PROVINCIAL GENERAL ELECTION. HARDIE WAS ACTIVE WITH THE LETHBRIDGE MASONS, THE ALBERTA UNION OF MUNICIPALITIES, AND HAD AN AVID INTEREST IN ASTROLOGY. HARDIEVILLE, THE FORMER HAMLET NORTHEAST OF LETHBRIDGE THAT WAS ANNEXED BY THE CITY IN 1978, WAS NAMED AFTER HIM. W. D. L. HARDIE DIED ON JUNE 16, 1942. History
AT THE TIME OF DONATION PATRICIA SASSA (DONOR) WROTE TO THE COLLECTIONS STAFF AND SAID, “SINCE MY RETIREMENT FROM PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING IN JUNE, 1998; I ACQUIRED THIS INFANT SAFETY CAR SEAT WITH THE HOPE OF BECOMING A GRANNY SOMEDAY IN THE FUTURE AS MY SON HAD BEEN MARRIED AT LEAST 5 YEARS AT THE TIME. THE HEALTH UNIT RENTED THESE “CHRYSLER LOVE SEATS” TO MAKE IT AFFORDABLE TO FAMILIES THAT CHOSE NOT TO PURCHASE THEM AT HIGHER PRICES SINCE THEY WERE USED ONLY TO 20 LBS. HOWEVER THE LIFE OF THE SEAT WAS ONLY 10 YEAR AFTER USE; ESPECIALLY THOSE LEFT IN THE VEHICLES AND EXPOSED TO SUN AND VARYING TEMPERATURES. THEY WERE THEN DESTROYED UNDER THE RULES OF TRANSPORT CANADA OR THE MANUFACTURER. SOME MANUFACTURERS HAVE SINCE CHANGED THE EXPIRY DATES TO AS EARLY AS 5 YEARS. ALTHOUGH THE EXACT YEAR THE H.U. BEGAN RENTING IS UNKNOWN, THEY DISCONTINUED THEIR RENTAL SYSTEM IN 1994, THEREFORE THE NEWER ONES WERE BEING SOLD TO FAMILIES. THAT IS WHEN I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PURCHASE ONE THAT INCLUDED NEW STRAPPING. MY INTEREST IN DONATING THIS MODEL IS THAT IT APPEARS TO ME AS ONE OF THE FIRST. MY RECOLLECTION OF TRANSPORTING OUR TWO BOYS, AS WITH ALL PARENTS OF OUR ERA, WAS THAT WE CARRIED THEM IN OUR LAPS, OR ON THE BACK SEAT THAT WERE PLANKED WITH A BOARD AND SUPPORTED WITH LEGS SO THE ENTIRE BACK SEAT WAS LIKE A BED, COVERED WITH A ‘FUTON’ OR IF WE OWNED A STATION WAGON, THEY WERE JUST PLACED IN THE VERY BACK. I ALSO REMEMBER ACQUIRING A LITTLE SEAT THAT HOOKED OVER THE FRONT BENCH SO THE CHILD COULD VIES THE SCENERY AROUND HIM. TODAY AS WE CONTINUE TO OBSERVE THE NEWEST OF RULES, VARIATIONS OF SAFETY SEATS AND PRICE TAGS; IT SEEMS A MIRACLE THAT OUR CHILDREN SURVIVED. MIND YOU, THE SPEED AND DESIGNS OF CARS WERE NOT AS SOPHISTICATED, HOWEVER THERE WAS ALWAYS THAT ELEMENT OF DANGER FOR ACCIDENTS TO OCCUR AND MANY LIVES WERE LOST DUE TO CARELESSNESS.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE SEE PERMANENT FILE.

History
THE FOLLOWING NARRATIVE WAS SUBMITTED BY PAT DE BOER TO THE GALT IN 2009. MY DAD PURCHASED THIS MEDICAL DEVICE SOMETIME BETWEEN 1945 AND 1949. IF HE BOUGHT IT IN 1945, HE WOULD HAVE STILL BEEN LIVING ON THE FARM AT GRANUM AND IT WAS NOT UNCOMMON TO HAVE SALESMEN DRIVE INTO THE YARD SELLING ALL SORTS OF THINGS. IF HE BOUGHT IT BETWEEN 1946 AND 1949 HE WOULD HAVE BEEN LIVING IN VANCOUVER AND I AM GUESSING THAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN PURCHASED FROM A SALESMAN THAT CAME TO THE HOUSE. THESE MEDICAL DEVICES WERE USUALLY “GUARANTEED” TO CURE ALMOST ANYTHING BUT I THINK THAT DAD WOULD HAVE BOUGHT IT TO HELP WITH HIS BRONCHITIS. THE HIGH HUMIDITY IN VANCOUVER WAS HARD ON HIS LUNGS. I DON’T EVER REMEMBER SEEING DAD USE IT, ALTHOUGH I AM SURE HE DID (AT LEAST IN VANCOUVER). WE MOVED TO PENTICTON, BC IN 1949 WHERE IT WAS MUCH DRIER AND I DON’T HAVE ANY RECOLLECTION OF HIM USING IT THERE EITHER, ALTHOUGH I THINK HE PROBABLY DID, ESPECIALLY WHEN WE FIRST MOVED. I CAN REMEMBER, THOUGH, THAT I WAS ALLOWED TO “PLAY” WITH IT ON THE ODD OCCASION, AS LONG AS MY MOTHER SUPERVISED. I REMEMBER FEELING VERY GROWN UP WHEN I WAS ALLOWED TO PUT ON THE GOGGLES AND HAVE THE LIGHT SHINING ON ME BECAUSE I FELT I WAS RECEIVING A “WONDERFUL ADULT HEALING PROCEDURE”. IT WAS KEPT IN THE CLOSET OVER THE STAIRS FOR AS LONG AS THEY WERE IN PENTICTON AND BROUGHT WITH THEM WHEN THEY MOVED TO LETHBRIDGE IN 1962. AFTER THEY MOVED, IT WAS PUT IN A CLOSET AND FORGOTTEN ABOUT. MY DAD DIED IN 1975 AND MOM STAYED IN THE HOUSE UNTIL SHE DIED IN 1980. MY OLDEST DAUGHTER AND HER HUSBAND MOVED INTO THE HOUSE AFTER MOM DIED AND THE “MARVELOUS MEDICAL MACHINE” REMAINED IN STORAGE UNTIL MY DAUGHTER AND HER HUSBAND MOVED INTO THEIR OWN HOUSE IN COALDALE. WE CLOSED MOM AND DAD’S HOUSE DOWN IN 1983 AND THE MACHINE WAS GIVEN TO THE GALT MUSEUM AT THAT TIME. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY MOM NEVER GOT RID OF THIS ITEM. THE ONLY EXPLANATION IS THAT MY MOTHER WAS A GREAT SAVER AND VERY RARELY EVER DISPOSED OF ANYTHING BECAUSE “YOU MIGHT NEED IT ONE DAY”.
