THIS PATCH WAS SEWN TO THE SHOULDERS OF UNIFORMS ISSUED BY THE LETHBRIDGE FIRE DEPARTMENT. ACCORDING TO INFORMATION PROVIDED BY DEPUTY FIRE/EMS CHIEF DANA TERRY IN AN EMAIL FROM OCTOBER 7, 2015, THIS DESIGN WAS IN USE BY THE 1950S. ON SEPTEMBER 15, 2015 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED CLIFF ‘CHARLIE’ BROWN, RETIRED PLATOON CHIEF, WHO SERVED WITH FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES FROM 1966 TO 2004. OF THIS PATCH, BROWN SAID: “[FIREMEN] HAD BLACK AND WHITE, AND THE OFFICERS HAD GOLD… THEIRS WAS A LITTLE BIT FANCIER.” IN AN INTERVIEW WITH MACLEAN ON SEPTEMBER 10, 2015, TREVOR LAZENBY, LIEUTENANT WITH LETHBRIDGE FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES, RECALLED THAT THIS DESIGN WAS STILL IN USE DURING HIS SCHOOL PRACTICUM WITH THE DEPARTMENT IN 1993, BUT WAS SHORTLY THEREAFTER CHANGED OUT FOR A DESIGN THAT INCORPORATED THE “EMS” ACRONYM (SEE P20140019003). LAZENBY SAID: “THE HALF-MOON BLACK AND WHITE FLASH WAS ON THE UNIFORM AT THE TIME [WHEN I WAS HIRED AS A DISPATCHER IN 1994]. WE HAD THE PALE BLUE SHIRTS, THE NAVY BLUE WOOL PANTS, AND LONG AND SHORT-SLEEVED SHIRTS WITH THIS FLASHER ON THEM… I GOT ISSUED SHIRTS WITH THAT ON [THEM] BUT I HAD TO CHANGE THEM OUT [RIGHT AWAY] BECAUSE WE’D GONE ON TO THE NEW FLASHER.” SEE PERMANENT FILE P20150010001-GA FOR FULL TRANSCRIPTS OF REFERENCED INTERVIEWS ALONG WITH OTHERS WITH FIRE/EMS MEMBERS AND ADDITIONAL RELATED RESEARCH.

SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS, INCLUDES CASE, HARNESS ASSEMBLY, MASK WITH STRAP, AND PAPER PASS CERTIFICATE. .A: CASE. BLACK MOULDED, TEXTURED PLASTIC CASE. ROUGHLY RECTANGULAR SHAPED. HINGED AT THE BACK, CASE HAS THREE HANDLES ON THE FRONT: ONE IS IN THE CENTRE OF THE CASE, WITH THE OTHER TWO ARE ON THE CORNERS OF THE BOX. THERE ARE TWO PLASTIC LATCHES BETWEEN THE THREE HANDLES. BLACK AND SILVER COLOURED STICKER ON THE TOP OF THE BOX READS: "MSA AIRMASK". A SECOND BLACK AND SILVER STICKER, ABOVE ONE OF THE LATCHES, READS: "ULTRALITE PRESSURE DEMAND" AND ALSO HAS "PASS IN BOX" HANDWRITTEN IN BLACKMARKER. A THIRD BLACK AND SILVER STICKER THAT READS "MSA AIRMASK" IS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX. YELLOW PIECE OF DUCT TAPE ON RIGHT SIDE, HANDWRITTEN IN BLACK INK: "ULTRALITE BMR". INSIDE THE BOX IS SUBDIVIDED INTO COMPARTMENTS. AFFIXED TO THE INSIDE TOP OF THE LID IS A PAGE OF INSTRUCTIONS TITLED "MSA AIR MASK, PRESSURE DEMAND TYPE". A SMALL PIECE OF PAPER AFIXED TO THE INSIDE OF THE LID IS TITLED "PACKING ARRANGEMENT" AND HAS AN ILLUSTRATION OF HOW THE UNIT SHOULD BE PACKED AWAY. DIMENSIONS PROVIDED ABOVE CORRESPOND TO THIS CASE. OVERALL IN FAIR TO GOOD CONDITION. THE TWO "MSA AIRMASK" STICKERS HAVE PARTIALLY PEELED AWAY, WITH THE TOP STICKER MISSING THE BOTTOM OF "ASK" IN "MASK" AND WITH THE BOTTOM STICKER MISSING PARTS OF THE "MSA": THE "M" AND "A" ARE PARTIALLY MISSING, WHILE THE "S" IS ENTIRELY GONE; "MASK" OF THIS STICKER IS ALSO VERY DAMAGED. LATCH BELOW THE "ULTRALITE" STICKER IS IN GOOD CONDITION, WHILE THE OTHER IS PARTIALLY BROKEN. SEVERAL SCUFFS AND SCRATCHES IN THE PLASTIC, ESPECIALLY ALONG THE BOTTOM. .B: HARNESS ASSEMBLY. BLACK PLASTIC, METAL, AND FABRIC WITH SILVER COLOURED METAL. OUTER PORTION OF HARNESS DESIGNED TO HOLD BOTTLE OF COMPRESSED AIR. BLACK METAL BRACKET RUNS VERTICALLY UP AND DOWN THE HARNESS AND HAS A SILVER COLOURED CIRCULAR METAL BAND TO HOLD TANK IN PLACE. THE SILVER BAND IS 7.7CM WIDE AND HAS TWO BLACK STICKERS WITH “MSA” IN YELLOW STUCK ON. BOTTOM OF BLACK METAL BRACKET HAS A TRIANGULAR SHAPED PIECE, WITH A ROUND RUBBER TIP, TO HOLD THE BOTTOM OF THE AIR TANK IN PLACE. BELOW SILVER BAND IS A STICKER, WITH A DISCOLOURED WHITE BACKGROUND AND BLACK LETTERS GIVING INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE, ENTITLED: “CUSTOM 4500/ULTRALITE BELT MOUNTED SCBA. OPEN CIRCUIT, PRESSURE-DEMAND ENTRY AND ESCAPE SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS OR COMBINATION SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS AND TYPE C SUPPLIED AIR RESPIRATOR.” SILVER BAND FOR TANK HAS A HANDLE THAT EXPANDS AND CONTRACTS THE BAND, TO ALLOW FOR REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF AIR TANK. AT THE TOP OF THE BLACK METAL BRACKET, THERE IS A CIRCULAR SECTION WHICH ALLOWS FOR THE ATTACHMENT OF TWO BLACK PADDED FABRIC SHOULDER STRAPS. THESE STRAPS ARE BOLTED ON WITH BLACK AND SILVER COLOURED BOLTS. BLACK METAL BRACKET ATTACHES AT WAIST AREA TO BLACK MOULDED PIECE OF PLASTIC. BLACK MOULDED PLASTIC FITS AROUND THE HIP AREA OF THE WEARER. SHOULDER STRAPS COME DOWN FROM TOP OF METAL BRACKET AND ATTACH TO THIS BLACK PLASTIC JUST ABOVE THE HIP. SHOULDER STRAPS ARE PADDED AND HAVE A SECOND SMALLER STRAP, WHICH WOULD CROSS THE WEARER’S CHEST WITH A BLACK SIDE RELEASE PLASTIC BUCKLE, WITH THE FEMALE COMPONENT ON THE RIGHT STRAP. ON EACH STRAP BELOW THE PLASTIC BUCKLE IS A SILVER COLOURED “D” RING. ABOVE THE BUCKLE ON EACH STRAP IS A SILVER COLOURED SILK SCREEN SECTION WITH “MSA”. AT THE BOTTOM WAIST PORTION OF THE MOULDED PLASTIC IS ANOTHER BLACK FABRIC STRAP, TO GO AROUND THE WEARER’S WAIST. THE BELT ATTACHES WITH A SILVER COLOURED METAL LATCH PLATE ON THE RIGHT SIDE, WHICH FITS INTO A BLACK PLASTIC BUCKLE, WITH A BLACK PLASTIC BUTTON TO RELASE, ON THE WEARER’S LEFT SIDE. ATTACHED TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BELT IS A PRESSURE REGULATOR AND HIGH PRESSURE SUPPLY HOSE. THE PRESSURE REGULATOR CONSISTS OF BLACK METAL AND PLASTIC, AND GOLD AND RED COLOURED METAL. A CIRCULAR GOLD COLOURED METAL PIECE HAS REMNANTS OF TWO STICKERS ON ITS FACE: “MSA AIR MASK – MFD BY MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES COMPANY – PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA – PRESSURE DEMAND.” BELOW IT IS A HOSE COUPLING. THIS COUPLING HAS A BLACK RUBBER CAP, EMBOSSED WITH “FHR”. BESIDE THIS IS AN AIR PRESSURE GAUGE: BLACK METAL TEXTURED EDGE, GLASS FACE, AND RUBBER ENCASING. THE FACE OF THE GAUGE IS OFF-WHITE WITH A DIAL INCREASING IN INCREMENTS OF 5 (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30), WITH A RED SECTION FROM 0-5, A YELLOW SECTION BETWEEN 20 AND 25, AND A GREY SECTION AT 30. BELOW THE DIAL IS “PSI X 100 – USE NO OIL – MSA 18” BESIDE THE GAUGE IS A RED COLOURED METAL KNOB, WITH “ß OPEN – BY PASS” EMBOSSED ON FRONT FACE. BESIDE THIS RED KNOB IS A GOLD COLOURED KNOB WITH A SILVER COLOURED TAB “^PUSH^”. ON THE FACE OF THE GOLD KNOB, EMBOSSED, IS “MAIN LINE ^” WITH “MSA” IN CENTRE. OPPOSITIE THE PRESSURE GAUGE IS A HIGH PRESSURE SUPPLY HOSE. THE HOSE IS BLACK PLASTIC AND FABRIC. ON THE END OF THIS HOSE IS A SILVER COLOURED BELL, USED AS A LOW AIR ALARM. AT THE VERY END OF THE HOSE IS A BLACK TEXTURED METAL COUPLING. .C: MASK WITH HOSE. BLACK PLASTIC RESPIRATOR MASK WITH CLEAR PLASTIC VISOR. FITTED NOSE PIECE WITH TWO SMALL CIRCLES ON EITHER SIDE OF BRIDGE OF NOSE PIECE. EACH CIRCLE HAS BLACK PLASTIC SPOKES AND A TRANSPARENT FLAP, WHICH IS ON THE INSIDE OF THE NOSE PIECE. HANDWRITTEN IN GOLD COLOURED INK, ON THE INSIDE OF NOSE PIECE, “G29C” OR “929C”. FRONT OF NOSE PIECE, VISIBLE THROUGH THE VISOR, HAS “MEDIUM” EMBOSSED ONTO MASK. FIVE BLACK PLASTIC STRAPS WITH SILVER COLOURED BUCKLES ALLOW MASK TO BE SECURELY TIGHTENED ONTO THE HEAD. STRAPS MEET AT A ROUGHLY STAR-SHAPED PIECE THAT SITS AT THE BACK OF THE HEAD. THIS STAR-SHAPED PIECE HAS THE FOLLOWING EMBOSSED ONTO THE PLASTIC: “M2 C5 – MSA – PULL FRONT STRAP LAST – U”. ABOVE THE “M2 C5” IS AN EMBOSSED MULTI-SPOKED CIRCLE. EMBOSSED IN THE CENTRE OF THE CIRCLE: “93 – 94 – 95” EACH OF THE FIVE STRAPS ARE LABELLED; TWO AT THE BASE OF MASK, EACH LABELLED “NECK”, NEXT TWO UP ARE “SIDE”, AND THE FIFTH STRAP AT THE TOP OF THE MASK IS “FRONT”. ON FRONT OF MASK, AT THE MOUTH AREA, IS A LONG ACCORDION-STYLE HOSE. IT IS ATTACHED TO THE MASK WITH A SILVER COLOURED METAL CLAMP. ON THE NUT OF THIS CLAMP IS WRITTEN “ALL STAINLESS BREEZE”. BELOW IS A BLACK METAL BAND, WHICH IS STAMPED IN YELLOW WITH “-18 TINNERMAN”. BELOW THAT THERE IS A SILVER COLOURED METAL RING, WHICH HAS A BLACK FABRIC STRAP ATTACHED (SEE BELOW FOR DESCRIPTION OF THIS ITEM, P20150010017D). THE BOTTOM OF THE HOSE HAS A BLACK METAL BAND AND THEN A SILVER COLOURED, TEXTURED METAL PIECE TO CONNECT TO THE AIR SUPPLY CANISTER. BELOW THE HOSE CONNECTION, AT THE CHIN AREA OF THE MASK, IS A MEDIUM-LIGHT GREY CIRCLE, EMBOSSED WITH “MSA – U.S. PAT. 4,007,758”. TO THE RIGHT OF THE HOSE ATTACHEMENT HANDWRITTEN IN GREEN INK IS “#4”. ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE MASK, BETWEEN THE “NECK” AND “SIDE” STRAPS IS A FAINT STAMP IN YELLOW “7-212-“. EMBOSSED IN CENTRE OF MASK, ABOVE FACE VISOR, IS “MSA” IN A CIRCLE. INSIDE OF THE HOSE ATTACHMENT, BELOW THE MOULDED NOSE AREA, IS A BLACK DISK WITH HOLES IN IT. VISIBLE THROUGH THESE HOLES IS A PIECE OF GOLD-COLOURED METAL. DIMENSIONS OF MASK: HOSE IS 83.5CM LONG; VISOR IS 18CM WIDE. .D: STRAP ON MASK. BLACK FABRIC STRAP, WITH TWO BLACK SNAPS. SNAPS ONTO SILVER-COLOURED METAL RING AROUND THE HOSE. STRAP IS 92.5CM LONG AND 1.9CM WIDE. OVERALL CONDITION OF B, C, D: WELL WORN. ALL STICKERS SHOW SIGNS OF WEAR: DISCOLOURATION AND FINISH OF STICKERS SCRATCHED. STRUCTRUALLY IN GOOD CONDITION. MANY SCUFFS AND SCRATCHES ALL OVER. ALL FABRIC IN GOOD CONDITION. RUBBER RETAINS FLEXIBILITY AND PLASTICS ARE IN GOOD SHAPE WITH NO CRACKS. .E: PAPER PASS CERTIFICATE. GOLDENROD COLOURED PAPER. READS: "MSA - ULTRALITE DP - B.M.R. C/W FACEMASK. THIS UNIT TESTED AND HAD ACCEPTABLE PERFORMANCE ON SEPTEMBER 02, 2008. KEN HOBIAK" (WITH KEN'S SIGNATURE ABOVE HIS TYPED NAME). REVERSE OF PAPER: "THIS UNI PERFORM KEN H" (APPEARS TO HAVE MISPRINTED ON THIS SIDE). PAPER IS STANDARD LETTER SIZE. CONDITION IS GOOD: PAPER HAS BEEN CRUMBLED AND HAS A FEW SMALL TEARS AROUND THE OUTSIDE.

THIS SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS (SCBA) WAS USED BY THE LETHBRIDGE FIRE DEPARTMENT. IN A WRITTEN STATEMENT PROVIDED AT THE TIME OF DONATION, JESSE KURTZ, DEPUTY CHIEF – SUPPORT SERVICES (RETIRED), EXPLAINED THAT THE MASK WAS “USED BY ALL FIREFIGHTERS TO CONNECT TO THE BELT MOUNTED REGULATOR SCBA TO ENTER HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERES” AND THAT THE HARNESS WAS “USED BY ALL FIREFIGHTERS TO BREATH IN HAZARDOUS (SMOKY) ATMOSPHERES.” HE CONTINUED SAYING THAT THERE ARE “MORE MODERN MASK MOUNTED REGULATOR SCBAS [THAT HAVE BEEN] DEVELOPED AND PURCHASED.” IN THE SUMMER OF 2015, COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN, CONDUCTED A SERIES OF INTERVIEWS WITH CURRENT AND FORMER MEMBERS OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, INCLUDING: CLIFF “CHARLIE” BROWN (HIRED IN 1966, RETIRED 2004), TREVOR LAZENBY (HIRED IN 1994), AND LAWRENCE DZUREN (HIRED 1959, RETIRED 1992). BROWN EXPLAINED THAT THIS SCBA “WAS AN ON-DEMAND REGULATOR. THAT WAS NICE TO HAVE DEMAND, BECAUSE NO MATTER WHO IT WAS, THE HARDER YOU BREATHED, THE MORE AIR IT WOULD GIVE YOU. THE HARNESS IS PROBABLY MORE COMFORTABLE [THAN PREVIOUS ONES]. SOME GUYS WOULD USE THREE TANKS, SO THE HARNESS WAS A LITTLE BIT MORE COMFORTABLE FOR THEM. THEY’D COME OUT, THEY’D TURN AROUND, THEY WOULDN’T EVEN TAKE OFF THEIR GEAR. THEY’D TURN AROUND, THERE’D BE GUYS WHO WOULD TAKE THE TANK OFF, PUT ANOTHER TANK ON, HOOK IT ALL UP, A GOOD PAT ON THE BACK, AND BACK IN THEY’D GO WITH ANOTHER TANK. THEY’D DO THAT THREE TIMES BEFORE … THEY WERE JUST TOO TIRED … WE DIDN’T HAVE AN AIR COMPRESSOR TO FILL OUR OWN TANKS. I CAN’T REMEMBER WHERE THEY WENT. THEY MUST HAVE WENT TO THE SWIMMING POOL.” LAZENBY CONTINUED SAYING THAT THIS SCBA WAS “A VERY, VERY OLDER GENERATION SCBA BOTTLE. THESE WERE KIND OF RUDIMENTARY DESIGN. THE BOTTLE WAS STEEL ON THESE, WHICH MADE THEM VERY, VERY HEAVY. MODERN BOTTLES ARE FIBERGLASS WRAPPED WHICH MAKES THEM MUCH, MUCH LIGHTER; ADDED TO WHICH, IT HAD A BARELY PADDED HARNESS SYSTEM ON IT AND BASICALLY A GLORIFIED SEATBELT STRAP FOR A WAIST STRAP. SO WITH THESE KINDS OF THINGS, YOU DON’T WANT TO KEEP A TON OF WEIGHT ON YOUR SHOULDERS BECAUSE IT FATIGUES YOUR UPPER BODY VERY, VERY QUICKLY WHEN YOU’RE WORKING. BUT WITH THIS TYPE OF HARNESS ON THEM, IF YOU CINCHED THE WAIST UP REALLY TIGHT AND TOOK THE PRESSURE OFF YOUR SHOULDERS, THIS JUST SEEMED TO DIG INTO YOUR WAIST LIKE CRAZY, LIKE IT WAS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE TO WEAR … THAT BEING SAID, WHEN GUYS WENT TO THIS FROM LIKE THE CANISTERS THAT THEY USED TO WEAR, THIS MUST HAVE BEEN LIKE A NEW LEASE ON LIFE FOR THESE GUYS … I WORE THESE IN TRAINING – I DON’T THINK I EVER WORE ONE OF THESE BOTTLES ON AN ACTUAL FIRE CALL … WE HAD THE FIBERGLASS ONES IN FRONTLINE SERVICE WHEN I STARTED SO THIS WOULD BE PRE-1994, IF I’M NOT MISTAKEN. I DON’T THINK WE HAD THESE ON THE TRUCKS IN ’94. WE STILL SHARE THE SCBAS AS FAR AS THE BOTTLE AND THE HARNESS GOES … THEY’RE IN THE RACKS ON THE TRUCK, IN THE BACKS OF THE SEATS AND DOWN IN BY THE HOSE OR THE PUMP COMPARTMENTS.” IN DISCUSSING WHY THIS MODEL IS NO LONGER USED, LAZENBY STATED: “THIS HOSE EASILY CRIMPED SO YOUR AIR SUPPLY COULD BE CUT OFF. THE AIR SUPPLY THAT NOW GOES FROM THE TANK TO YOUR MASK IS A MUCH MORE RIGID HOSE THAT, REALLY, YOU’D HAVE TO BASICALLY BEND IT IN HALF TO STOP THE FLOW OF AIR.” DZUREN ADDED FURTHER: “PRIOR TO [THIS] OUR BREATHING APPARATUS WAS WHAT THEY CALLED A CANISTER TYPE OF BREATHING APPARATUS … IT WAS JUST A CANISTER THAT YOU HAD IN FRONT OF YOU HERE AND IT WAS LAYERS OF … GEL, AND SAND, AND SILICA … THERE WAS A SHELF-LIFE WITH THOSE THINGS. IF YOU USED THEM, YOU PRETTY WELL HAD TO DISCARD THEM AFTER YOU USED THEM.” WHEN ASKED WHEN THIS TYPE OF SCBA CAME INTO SERVICE, DZUREN STATED: “I WOULD PROBABLY SAY MAYBE IN THE ‘70S SOMETIME? … I RECALL GUYS GOING IN WHEN WE JUST HAD THOSE CANISTERS. THEY WOULD GO WITHOUT ANYTHING. AND THEY WOULD COME OUT AFTER A WHILE AND THEY WOULD BE BARFING THEIR GUYS OUT … IT SEEMED TO BE, EVEN PRIOR TO MY TIME, WHEN THE STORIES I HEARD FROM GUYS THERE LONGER THAN MYSELF, THAT SEEMED TO BE THE MACHO THING. THIS DEFIBRILLATOR WAS USED BY LETHBRIDGE FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES. THE LIFEPAK ™ 5 PORTABLE DC DEFIBRILLATOR/SCOPE WAS FIRST INTRODUCED BY THE PHYSIO CONTROL CORPORATION IN 1976. THIS DEVICE REPRESENTED A SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED WEIGHT REDUCTION AND FUNCTIONALITY COMPARED TO EARLIER MODELS. IT SOON BECAME THE STANDARD OF THE INDUSTRY UNTIL FURTHER IMPROVED MODELS WERE INTRODUCED IN 1991. ON SEPTEMBER 10, 2015 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED TREVOR LAZENBY, LIEUTENANT WITH LETHBRIDGE FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES, ABOUT THIS DEFIBRILLATOR. LAZENBY TRAINED AS A PARAMEDIC, AND STARTED HIS CAREER IN LETHBRIDGE WORKING AS A DISPATCHER IN 1994. LAZENBY SAID: “SO IN ITS DAY, THIS WAS THE CADILLAC. WE USED THIS. WE HAD ONE LIFEPAK 10 AND A NUMBER OF LIFEPAK 5S… [BY THE LATE 1990S] WE WERE MOVING TO THE 10S, AND THEN THE 10C, BUT WE STILL HAD THESE AROUND. WHEN WE RAN AN ACLS COURSE ON OUR DAYS OFF, TO GET RECERTIFIED THIS IS THE ONE THAT WE USED AND THESE DID FILL IN WHEN THE OTHER ONES WERE DOWN. THIS WAS A FAIRLY RUDIMENTARY DEVICE COMPARED TO THE LIFEPAK 10 IN THAT YOU COULD ONLY LOOK AT THREE DIFFERENT VIEWS OF THE HEART IN THIS ONE. THIS WAS A HEART MONITOR/DEFIBRILLATOR… IT HAS THIS LITTLE TINY SCREEN THAT YOU COULD SEE THIS LITTLE HEART RHYTHM ON, ALMOST LIKE THE RHYTHM WAS AN AFTERTHOUGHT… BUT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON HERE BEFORE YOU REALLY WANT TO USE THIS, THE DEFIBRILLATOR SIDE, RIGHT? [ON] THE NEW GENERATION ONES… THERE’S NO PADDLES ANYMORE, THEY’RE ALL THOSE STICKY PADS SO THE CONTACT IS BETTER. IT ENSURES BETTER ENERGY DELIVERED THROUGH THE HEART MUSCLE. BUT NOW THE SCREENS THAT YOU LOOK AT THE HEART RHYTHM ON ARE EIGHT INCHES BY EIGHT INCHES…THEY’RE A REAL GOOD SIZE COMPARED TO THIS ONE. THIS ONE ONLY GAVE YOU THREE LEADS TO THE HEART. IT USED TO BURN THE IMPRESSION [OF] THE HEART TRACING ONTO THE PAPER, TO SHOW UP ON THE GRID PAPER. AND THERE WAS NO DIAGNOSTIC MODE SO YOU COULDN’T TELL WITH THIS MACHINE IF SOMEONE WAS HAVING A HEART ATTACK OR NOT. WITH THE ECG CHANGES THAT SOMETIMES TAKE PLACE WITHIN THE MYOCARDIUM, YOU COULDN’T TELL THAT ON THIS MACHINE. SO YOU COULD LOOK AT IT AS SORT OF A DIAGNOSTIC AS FAR AS RHYTHM WENT, BUT YOU COULDN’T TELL THE ECG CHANGES AS FAR AS INFARCTION WENT… YOU’RE ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR EQUIPMENT. SO THIS WAS GOOD AT THE TIME, BUT IT WAS FALLING BEHIND.” LAZENBY CONTINUED: “A LOT OF SAFETY ISSUES WENT WITH THAT. IF YOU SLIPPED AND CONTACTED THE PATIENT, YOU COULD DEFIBRILLATE YOURSELF. IT JUST WAS SO UNSAFE TO CONTINUE DOING IT THIS WAY. THAT’S WHY WE’VE SINCE EVOLVED TO THE LIFEPAK 10 AND THE LIFEPAK 12, AND NOW WE’RE USING ZONE MONITORS WHERE EVERYTHING’S STICKY PADS. YOU DON’T TOUCH THE PATIENT ANYMORE… I ALMOST DEFIBRILLATED MYSELF ON THE FLIGHT BETWEEN SLAVE LAKE AND EDMONTON. WE HAD A PATIENT THAT CODED ABOUT A THIRD OF THE WAY TO EDMONTON, AND IT WAS A ROUGH FLIGHT. AND JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I HAD THIS GUY READY TO ‘JUICE’, WE HIT THIS POCKET OF AIR AND THE WHOLE PLANE DROPPED JUST AS I DISCHARGED THE PADDLES. AND I WAS LUCKY THAT NO PART OF HIM WAS TOUCHING THE METAL OF THE STRETCHER BECAUSE MY KNEE, MY LEG ENDED UP RESTING AGAINST THE METAL OF THE STRETCHER… SO YOU CAN SEE I HAVE A FIRSTHAND KNOWLEDGE OF THE SAFETY ISSUE.” LAZENBY CONCLUDED: “THE THING THAT I MISSED TO THE VERY LAST DAY THAT I WAS ON THE AMBULANCE WAS [NO LONGER] BEING ABLE TO USE PADDLES WHEN I DEFIBRILLATED SOMEONE. THIS CANVAS STRETCHER, ALONG WITH TWO WOODEN POLES, WAS USED BY THE LETHBRIDGE FIRE DEPARTMENT DURING MEDICAL EMERGENCIES, PRIOR TO THE INCORPORATION OF PARAMEDIC STAFF IN THE DEPARTMENT IN THE MID 1980S. AMONG DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL, IT IS REFERRED TO AS “POLES AND CANVAS”. ON SEPTEMBER 9, 2015 COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN MACLEAN INTERVIEWED LAWRENCE DZUREN, RETIRED FIRE CHIEF, WHO SERVED WITH THE LETHBRIDGE FIRE DEPARTMENT FROM 1959 TO 1992. OF THE POLES AND CANVAS, DZUREN SAID: “[THIS] WOULD BE IN THE AMBULANCE AND THERE’S TWO BIG WOODEN POLES, NICELY SANDED DOWN. WHEN YOU GOT THE PATIENT YOU WOULD ROLL HIM TO THE SIDE, TUCK THAT UNDER, ROLL HIM BACK ONTO [THE CANVAS], PUT THE POLES IN, AND PICK HIM UP, ONE [FIREMAN] ON EACH END… THAT’S THE WAY WE CARRIED PATIENTS OUT OF WHEREVER WE HAD TO CARRY THEM… I RECALL GOING TO ONE, THERE WAS A BLIZZARD GOING ON, WE GOT THIS BIG FELLA… HE WAS ABOUT 6’5”, AND WE HAD TO GET HIM OUT OF THE BASEMENT … WITH POLES LIKE THIS… YOU THINK YOU CAN MANIPULATE, AND WE USUALLY DID SUCCEED IN GETTING THEM OUT OF THERE, BUT IT WAS WITH A LOT OF BACK BREAKING STUFF TO GET HIM UP THE STAIRS… BECAUSE ONE GUY IS UP THERE TO LIFT THIS WAY, AND THE OTHER GUY IS BENDING DOWN… [POLES AND CANVAS] CAME OUT OF SERVICE WHEN WE STARTED GETTING PARAMEDICS [IN THE MID TO LATE 1980S]. BECAUSE NOW… THE PARAMEDICS AND NURSES PICK THEM UP AND MANUALLY SET THEM ONTO THE BED, WHERE WITH THIS… WE COULD JUST PICK THEM UP, PUT THEM ON [THE BED] AND AWAY WE WENT. BUT THEY FOUND [A METHOD] THAT’S MAYBE MORE EFFICIENT, OR EASIER ON THE PATIENT.” ON SEPTEMBER 15, 2015 MACLEAN INTERVIEWED CLIFF ‘CHARLIE’ BROWN, RETIRED PLATOON CHIEF, WHO SERVED WITH FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES FROM 1966 TO 2004. OF THE POLES AND CANVAS, BROWN SAID: “THAT’S WHAT I WAS TRAINED ON… THAT WAS OUR ‘SCOOP AND RUN’. THERE WERE STORIES WHERE GUYS WERE TRYING TO HOLD THE POLES UP AS HIGH AS THEY POSSIBLY COULD SO THE [PATIENT] WOULDN’T SLIDE DOWN… PRETTY SOON HIS LEGS ARE HANGING OVER YOUR SHOULDERS!... SEATBELT IS ATTACHED TO FORM THROUGH TWO PARALLEL OPENINGS IN PLASTIC PADDING AND THREADED THROUGH LOOP ON THE FRONT LIP OF THE FORM. AT THE TIME OF DONATION PATRICIA SASSA (DONOR) WROTE TO THE COLLECTIONS STAFF AND SAID, “SINCE MY RETIREMENT FROM PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING IN JUNE, 1998; I ACQUIRED THIS INFANT SAFETY CAR SEAT WITH THE HOPE OF BECOMING A GRANNY SOMEDAY IN THE FUTURE AS MY SON HAD BEEN MARRIED AT LEAST 5 YEARS AT THE TIME. THE HEALTH UNIT RENTED THESE “CHRYSLER LOVE SEATS” TO MAKE IT AFFORDABLE TO FAMILIES THAT CHOSE NOT TO PURCHASE THEM AT HIGHER PRICES SINCE THEY WERE USED ONLY TO 20 LBS. HOWEVER THE LIFE OF THE SEAT WAS ONLY 10 YEAR AFTER USE; ESPECIALLY THOSE LEFT IN THE VEHICLES AND EXPOSED TO SUN AND VARYING TEMPERATURES. THEY WERE THEN DESTROYED UNDER THE RULES OF TRANSPORT CANADA OR THE MANUFACTURER. SOME MANUFACTURERS HAVE SINCE CHANGED THE EXPIRY DATES TO AS EARLY AS 5 YEARS. ALTHOUGH THE EXACT YEAR THE H.U. BEGAN RENTING IS UNKNOWN, THEY DISCONTINUED THEIR RENTAL SYSTEM IN 1994, THEREFORE THE NEWER ONES WERE BEING SOLD TO FAMILIES. THAT IS WHEN I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PURCHASE ONE THAT INCLUDED NEW STRAPPING. MY INTEREST IN DONATING THIS MODEL IS THAT IT APPEARS TO ME AS ONE OF THE FIRST. MY RECOLLECTION OF TRANSPORTING OUR TWO BOYS, AS WITH ALL PARENTS OF OUR ERA, WAS THAT WE CARRIED THEM IN OUR LAPS, OR ON THE BACK SEAT THAT WERE PLANKED WITH A BOARD AND SUPPORTED WITH LEGS SO THE ENTIRE BACK SEAT WAS LIKE A BED, COVERED WITH A ‘FUTON’ OR IF WE OWNED A STATION WAGON, THEY WERE JUST PLACED IN THE VERY BACK. I ALSO REMEMBER ACQUIRING A LITTLE SEAT THAT HOOKED OVER THE FRONT BENCH SO THE CHILD COULD VIES THE SCENERY AROUND HIM. TODAY AS WE CONTINUE TO OBSERVE THE NEWEST OF RULES, VARIATIONS OF SAFETY SEATS AND PRICE TAGS; IT SEEMS A MIRACLE THAT OUR CHILDREN SURVIVED. MIND YOU, THE SPEED AND DESIGNS OF CARS WERE NOT AS SOPHISTICATED, HOWEVER THERE WAS ALWAYS THAT ELEMENT OF DANGER FOR ACCIDENTS TO OCCUR AND MANY LIVES WERE LOST DUE TO CARELESSNESS.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE SEE PERMANENT FILE.

1: AN ORANGE-BROWN CASE WITH BRONZE COLOURED HINGES, CLASPS, AND FEET. THERE IS A SINGLE HANDLE AT THE TOP MADE OF THE SAME FAUX LEATHER MATERIAL AS THE CASE ON TWO METAL HINGES. IT SITS ABOVE A GOLD PUSH CLASP. THERE ARE TWO BRONZE COLOURED HINGES THAT THE CASE SWINGS OPEN ON. THE CASE HAS EIGHT BRONZE-COLOURED DOMED FEET, FOUR OF WHICH SIT AT THE BOTTOM WITH THE HINGES AND FOUR OF WHICH ARE ON THE SIDE OF THE CASE. ON THE SAME SIDE SIX SILVER STUDS SIT IRREGULARLY IN THE BODY OF THE CASE. THE INSIDE OF THE CASE HAS A BUILT IN POUCH, ON WHICH A STICKER STATES “LETHBRIDGE MUNICIPAL HOSPITAL 3402041” AND A PIECE OF PAPER READING “OSCOLLOTONOMETER USE FOR BLOOD PRESSURE” IS TAPED ON. AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CASE, BOLTED TO THE CASE WITH SILVER STUDS SITS THE MEASURING MECHANISM OF THE OSCILLONOMETER. THE SILVER CASED MECHANISM HAS A BLACK RUBBER HAND PUMP ATTACHED, ALONG WITH MULTIPLE ATTACHMENT POINTS FOR THE TUBES OF THE PRESSURE CUFFS. TWO DIALS SIT ON ITS FACE, ONE RANGING FROM 7-0-18 AND READING “COMPARATIF”, THE SECOND RANGING FROM 0-300MMHG AND READING “MANOMETER”. NEXT TO IT IS A SILVER COLOURED PLATE HOLDING FOUR SILVER SCREW-IN KNOBS. 2: A CIRCULAR PAPER TAG RIMMED IN A METAL FRAME AND HELD WITH A SAFETY PIN TO THE HANDLE OF THE CASE. ON ONE SIDE THE TAG READS “C.S.R OSCILLOTONOMETER “CAMPARAT”” . THE TAG IS CRUMPLED AND SOME OF THE TEXT IS WORN OFF. H: 0.1 CM, D: 4.7 CM 3: A PIECE OF THE INSIDE LINING OF THE CASE THAT HAS PEELED OFF FROM THE SIDE. ONE SIDE IF THE FAUX LEATHER, THE OTHER A CARDBOARD PAPER COATED IN HARDENED GLUE. H: 0.1 CM, L: 23 CM, W: 5 CM 4: A GREY PRESSURE CUFF ATTACHED TO TWO TUBES, RED, AND BLACK. THE INFLATABLE PART OF THE CUFF MEASURES 46 CM BY 14 CM, WITH THE WRAP AROUND STRAP MEASURING 76 CM BY 4 CM. THE TWO RED AND BLACK TUBES MEASURE 63 CM LONG AND 0.5 CM AROUND. UPON DONATION TO THE MUSEUM, COLLECTIONS TECHNICIAN KEVIN MACLEAN ASKED MEMBERS OF THE GALT SCHOOL OF NURSING (GSN) ALUMNAE TO PROVIDE WRITTEN ANSWERS ON QUESTIONS PERTAINING TO EACH ARTIFACT DONATED IN THE COLLECTION. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS COME FROM THOSE RESPONSES CORRESPONDING TO EACH INDIVIDUAL ARTIFACT. THIS ARTIFACT IS CALLED AN OSCILLOTONOMETER AND IT WAS USED TO MEASURE THE BLOOD PRESSURE OF THE LEGS. THE OSCILLOTONOMETER WAS USED IN THE OPERATING ROOM (OR), WHERE IT WAS USED BY THE OR STAFF. IT CAME INTO THE POSSESSION OF THE GALT SCHOOL OF NURSING ALUMNAE IN 1988 AFTER ITS USE IN THE OR. THE ALUMNI BELIEVE THAT THIS ARTIFACT IS OF IMPORTANCE BECAME IT IS “SOMETHING NOT SEEN OFTEN BY FLOOR STAFF.” THIS ARTIFACT IS AMONG A COLLECTION DONATED NEAR THE END OF 2014, BEING THE SECOND WAVE OF GSN ARTIFACTS ACQUIRED BY THE MUSEUM THAT YEAR. WITH THE FIRST WAVE OF GSN ARTIFACTS COLLECTED IN SUMMER 2014, MACLEAN INTERVIEWED THE PAST ARCHIVISTS OF THE GALT SCHOOL OF NURSING COLLECTION, SHIRLEY HIGA, ELAINE HAMILTON, AND SUE KYLLO, ABOUT THEIR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE GSN ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION AND THE HISTORY OF ARTIFACTS DONATED. ON 12 JULY 2018, COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT ELISE PUNDYK MET WITH THREE MEMBERS OF GALT SCHOOL OF NURSING ALUMNI ASSOCIATION – SHARON DEJONG, DONNA KARL, AND SUE KYLLO – TO ESTABLISH FURTHER DETAILS ABOUT VARIOUS ARTIFACTS IN THIS WAVE OF GSN ACQUISITIONS. ABOUT THIS ARTIFACT, THE ALUMNI STATED THAT THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN USED FROM 1958 TO 1988 (BASED ON THEIR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES DURING THEIR CAREER AND THE CLOSING YEAR OF THE MUNICIPAL HOSPITAL).
