History
ITEM ORIGINALLY BELONGED TO DONOR'S FATHER, EDWARD BUCHANAN. EDWARD WAS A STAND-IN FOR THE EXECUTIONER AT THE LETHBRIDGE JAIL. EDWARD WAS PRESENT AT THE EXECUTION IN WHICH THIS ROPE WAS USED, IN THE LATE 1940S. THE EXECUTIONER SHOWED UP SO EDWARD DID NOT HAVE TO PERFORM THE EXECUTION HIMSELF, BUT KEPT PART OF THE ROPE THAT WAS USED. EDWARD WAS A MEMBER OF THE ALBERTA PROVINCIAL POLICE FROM 1919 UNTIL 1932 WHEN HE TRANSFERRED TO THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE. HE WAS A SENIOR STAFF SARGEANT, ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE AT LETHBRIDGE FROM MAY 1944 TO NOV. 1950. HE RETIRED IN 1950, THEN BECAME DIRECTOR OF CORRECTIONS FOR THE PROVINCE OF ALBERTA. FOLLOWING RETIREMENT EDWARD BECAME A MEMBER OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE VETERAN'S ASSOCIATION IN EDMONTON IN 1950/51, AND REMAINED A MEMBER UNTIL HIS PASSING; HE ALSO SERVED AS PRESIDENT OF THIS ASSOCIATION. SEE P20020090001-GA FOR COMPLETE BIOGRAPHY OF EDWARD BUCHANAN. *** NOOSE LABEL COPY BELOW SUBMITTED TO LETHBRIDGE LIVING MAGAZINE ON 11 FEBRUARY 2013 AS PART OF MAGAZINE’S WHAT’S IT FEATURE. COPY WAS AUTHORED BY COLLECTION VOLUNTEER KIRSTEN CHRISTOPHERSON AND DEVELOPED WITH ASSISTANCE FROM NOOSE DONOR TED BUCHANAN WHO PARTICIPATED IN A GALT INTERVIEW ON 18 JANUARY 2013. TO READ OR VIEW ENTIRE INTERVIEW, PLEASE SEE PERMANENT FILE. IN NOVEMBER 1948 CHIEF JUSTICE W.R. HOWSON DELIVERED THE SENTENCE THAT CONVICTED MURDERER STANLEY DONALD MCLAREN WAS WAITING FOR; “YOU WILL BE TAKEN FROM HERE TO THE PROVINCIAL JAIL AT LETHBRIDGE AND CONFINED TILL MARCH 30, 1949, AND ON THAT DATE YOU WILL BE TAKEN TO THE PLACE OF YOUR EXECUTION AND HANGED BY THE NECK UNTIL YOU ARE DEAD. AND MAY THE LORD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOUL.” THREE YEARS PRIOR TO HIS SENTENCING MCLAREN WAS ROBBING A STORE IN CALGARY WHEN HE GOT INTO A STRUGGLE WITH GROCER LUM YUM WING, FATALLY STRIKING HIM WITH A REVOLVER. A YEAR OF INJUSTICE PASSED UNTIL MCLAREN WAS ARRESTED IN TORONTO FOR A SEPARATE, UNRELATED INCIDENT. UPON ARREST, HIS WIFE PROVIDED INFORMATION TO AUTHORITIES ON HIS PREVIOUS CRIME, LEADING HIM TO CONFESS TO MURDER. NOOSE DONOR AND EXECUTION WITNESS TED BUCHANAN IS THE SON OF THE LATE MR. EDWARD BUCHANAN, A FORMER LETHBRIDGE RCMP STAFF SERGEANT. IN 2013, THE JUNIOR BUCHANAN TOLD THE MUSEUM THAT A LOCAL SHERIFF WAS ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE 1949 LETHBRIDGE HANGING. “THIS SHERIFF”, SAID TED, “WAS VERY UNEASY THAT IF THE HANGMAN COULDN’T DO HIS JOB THEN HE WAS GOING TO HAVE TO [DO IT]. HE ASKED IF DAD WOULD STEP IN FOR HIM AND DAD AGREED. DAD (THEREFORE) HAD SOME AUTHORITY AND HE WAS …RESPONSIBLE FOR WHO WAS THERE. HE ASKED ME ONE NIGHT… ‘WOULD YOU LIKE TO COME UP TO THE JAIL AND WITNESS A HANGING?’ AND I THOUGHT ABOUT IT FOR A MINUTE AND I SAID, ‘SURE.’” IT WASN’T UNTIL ABOUT A DECADE LATER WHEN EDWARD UNLOCKED A TRUNK FULL OF MEMORABILIA FROM HIS TIME WITH THE RCMP THAT TED LEARNED THAT HIS FATHER HAD TAKEN THE NOOSE HOME WITH HIM. SAID TED IN 2013, “THE REASON HE BROUGHT IT OUT WAS BECAUSE I WAS A WITNESS TO THIS HANGING AT THE JAIL. AND THIS WAS THE ROPE THAT WAS AROUND THE NECK OF THE FELLOW.” TED RECALLED “[DAD] THOUGHT THESE THINGS WOULD BE INTERESTING TO PUT INTO A MUSEUM SOMETIME. …HE SAID THESE THINGS CAME FROM LETHBRIDGE, FIND OUT IF [THE GALT MUSEUM & ARCHIVES] WOULD BE INTERESTED IN THEM.” AS PER EDWARD’S REQUEST, TED DONATED THIS PIECE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE HISTORY AND OTHER RELATED ARTIFACTS TO THE MUSEUM IN 1999.

History
PART OF KEY/PUNCH FINGERPRINT SYSTEM; USED WITH ITEMS P19960112025,27-GA. FINGERPRINT CHARACTERISTICS WERE IDENTIFIED ON CARD BY PUNCHING TAB IN CODED BOXES AROUND CARD EDGE. KEY WAS SLOTTED THROUGH STACK OF CARDS, WHICH WAS SHAKEN OUT TO IDENTIFY MATCHING CHARACTERISTICS AMONG CARDS, WHICH COULD THEN BE FURTHER NARROWED BY REPEATING PROCESS. USED BY LETHBRIDGE POLICE BEGINNING IN 1984. HOLES PUNCHED ON THE EDGE OF THE CARDS IDENTIFIED THE MAIN FEATURES OF EACH PRINT. BY INSERTING THE RODS THROUGH STACKS OF CARDS AND SHAKING THE PILE, INVESTIGATORS ELIMINATED PRINTS UNTIL A MATCHING CLASSIFICATION WAS FOUND. RESULTS WERE THEN CONFIRMED BY A FINGERPRINT TECHNICIAN. NO TWO FINGERPRINTS HAVE EVER BEEN FOUND TO BE IDENTICAL IN EVERY DETAIL. FINGERPRINT EVIDENCE IS THEREFORE "THE MOST COMMON, MOST SOUGHT AFTER, POSITIVE AND VALUABLE OF ALL TYPES OF EVIDENCE ENCOUNTERED IN CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS" ACCORDING TO IDENT OFFICER GLEN MICHELSON. THE CARD SYSTEM WAS REPLACED BY THE AUTOMATIC FINGER IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM (AFIS), WHICH OFFERS LOCAL INVESTIGATORS ACCESS TO A COMPUTERIZED DATABASE IN CALGARY. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON MICHELSON'S IDENT CAREER, SEE P19960112027. *UPDATE* IN 2014 COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT JANE EDMUNDSON CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF ART OBJECTS, INCLUDING SOME DONATED BY THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE POLICE SERVICES.
