ACCORDING TO INSPECTOR BILL KAYE, WHO USED THIS COLLAR IN CONJUNCTION WITH HIS POLICE SERVICE DOG, ZORKO, THIS WAS USED "AS AN EVERYDAY WORKING COLLAR. WHEN MY DOG WENT TO WORK THIS ONE WENT ON. IT'S THE CONCEPT OF THE CHOKE CHAIN. JUST LIKE THE METAL ONES BUT IT'S QUIET, IT DOESN'T JINGLE. IT DIDN'T MAKE THAT NOISE. IT JUST GAVE YOU SOMETHING YOU HAD TO HANG ONTO. YOU COULD SNAP YOUR LEASH ON THERE. YOU COULD HOLD YOUR DOG BY IT. WE DID DO THOSE THINGS AND THE DOG KNEW WHILE HE WAS WEARING THIS HE WAS GOING TO WORK." History
THIS GICLEE WAS CREATED BY LEON KEEPING ON JUNE 11, 2012 AND IS EDITION NUMBER 54 OF AN EDITION SIZE OF 300. ACCORDING TO A DOCUMENT, CREATED BY DANA TERRY, DEPUTY CHIEF – FIRE AND EMS OPERATIONS, LETHBRIDGE FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES IN JUNE 2012, IT WAS CREATED TO CELEBRATE THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LETHBRIDGE FIRE DEPARTMENT’S “ROLE AS AN INTEGRATED EMS SERVICE AND ALSO MARKS THE DEPARTMENT’S 126TH YEAR PROVIDING FIRE SUPPRESSION.” THIS DOCUMENT HIGHLIGHTS SOME OF THE HISTORY OF THE LETHBRIDGE FIRE DEPARTMENT, EXPLAINING THAT “IN 1886 [AS] THE LETHBRIDGE FIRE BRIGADE (LATER CHANGED TO ‘DEPARTMENT’ IN 1914) [BEGAN] TO OPERATE AS A VOLUNTEER ‘BUCKET BRIGADE’. IN 1909 IT BECAUSE A FULL TIME FIRE DEPARTMENT WITH TEN MEMBERS; SEVEN FIREFIGHTERS, A LIEUTENANT, A CAPTAIN, AND THE CHIEF.” THE DOCUMENT ALSO SPELLS OUT THE CREATION OF AMBULANCE SERVICES IN LETHBRIDGE: “PRIOR TO 1912 THE GALT HOSPITAL PROVIDED AMBULANCE SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY OF LETHBRIDGE. THE OPERATION OF THE AMBULANCE SERVICE BECAME A COMMUNITY CONCERN DUE TO EXTENDED RESPONSE TIMES BECAUSE OF THE NEED OF A DOCTOR’S CERTIFICATE TO TRANSPORT A PATIENT. THE DEATH OF JOE BIRNEY IN 1910 AT ELLISON MILLING COMPANY BROUGHT THIS TO A HEAD AND ON JUNE 22, 1912 CITY LEADERS DECIDED TO PASS THE AMBULANCE SERVICE TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT BECAUSE IT WAS THOUGHT THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO PROVIDE RELIABLE AND TIMELY RESPONSE.” SEE PERMANENT FILE FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND THE CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY.

THIS PAINTING WAS COMMISSIONED BY THE LETHBRIDGE POLICE SERVICE, TO DEPICT ITS EVOLUTION FROM FORMATION TO THE PRESENT DAY (2002). History
ACCORDING TO INSPECTOR BILL KAYE, WHO USED THE KONG IN CONJUNCTION WITH HIS POLICE SERVICE DOG, ZORKO, IT IS A TOY. HE SAID, 'FOR YEARS YOU THROW BALLS FOR DOGS AND EVERYONE HAS HAD A BALL OR STICK... [THE KONG BOUNCED UNPREDICTABLY SO IT SEEMED LIKE IT WAS MORE FUN FOR THE DOG - HE LIKED CHASING IT. WE HAVE ACTUALLY GONE AWAY AND WE ARE NOT USING THEM ANYMORE FOR THAT EXACT REASON. WE THINK THAT SOME OF OUR DOGS' ELBOW JOINT AND HIP JOINT OR LEG PROBLEMS ARE COMING FROM THOSE SUDDEN MOVEMENTS SO WE HAVE GONE BACK TO A PREDICTABLE BALL." THIS KONG BELONGED TO ZORKO FOR MANY YEARS SO IT IS WELL WORN. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE HISTORY OF ZORKO AND THE CANINE UNIT SEE P20080008001. FOR MORE INFORMATION SEE PERMANENT FILE.

History
ACCORDING TO DONOR BILL LINGARD AT TIME OF DONATION, "(THE TAG WAS) IN A BOX OF DIVERSE ITEMS... THEY MAY HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO MY OLDER BROTHER BUT WERE MINE AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER." LINGARD RECALLED, "THE TAG WAS WORN BY A GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG, 'REX' OWENED BY MY LATE UNCLE, DONALD N. LINGARD. WHEN DON WENT INTO THE ARMY, THE DOG REMAINED AT MY GRANDPARENTS' HOME AT 505 14TH ST. S. WHICH LATER BECAME OUR HOME. THE DOG JUST SORT OF WENT WITH THE HOUSE. I KNEW THE DOG AS A CHILD, HE WAS A SELF APPOINTED GUARDIAN OF NEIGHBORHOOD CHILDREN, WITH US WHEN WE PLAYED, ALWAYS BETWEEN US AND THE STREET. THE DOG WAS QUITE POSSESIVE OF THE FAMILY, FOR EXAMPLE, MY MOM HAD CALLED MR SCOTT, A PLUMBER, TO THE HOUSE TO DO SOME WORK - ON COMPLETION OF THE JOB SHE WAS STANDING AT THE FRONT STEPS TALKING WITH HIM. MR. SCOTT WAS STANDING ON THE FRONT YARD SIDEWALK. THE DOG WAS WALKING BACK AND FORTH AND MY MOM NOTICED THAT MR SCOTT WAS NOW AT THE CITY SIDEWALK. EACH TIME THE DOG WALKED BY HIM, HE GAVE MR. SCOTT A SLIGHT BUMP, MOVING HIM BACK A STEP." IN 1941, DOG LICENSES WERE SOLD BY THE CITY OF LETHBRIDGE POLICE (C.L.P.).
